I've said in previous posts that Mike Price had his chance. He took UTEP on a wild ride that lasted just 2 seasons, but has done no better than the lower ends of mediocrity and inconsistency since. Sadly, UTEP has had such a sorry football history that 4 wins in a season are considered a success. Today's college football is fast paced and, unfortunately, money-driven. UTEP needs a money-maker in the form of MIKE LEACH.

UTEP should pull all the stops and HIRE MIKE LEACH. I was born and raised in El Paso and have been a UTEP fan my entire life. I got my undergraduate degree from Texas Tech and Master's from UTEP and would love to see Leach at UTEP.

Leach had Tech ranked #2 last year and 2 wins away from playing for the National Championship. "60 Minutes" did a story on him last year calling him "The Mad Scientist of football", see the story at and "Texas Monthly" called him the best college football coach in the country. The nation's college football coaches named him "Coach of the Year" last year while on his way to becoming Tech's winningest coach. I'll be at the Alamo Bowl cheering on Tech this Saturday, but it'll be bitter sweet.

At the very least, UTEP should talk to Leach about coaching the Miners. I'm sick and tired of having one successful season per decade. I'm 46 and with the life expectancy in the U.S. at about 78, I'll be lucky to see UTEP have 3 more winning seasons before I die.

That move alone would put UTEP on the football map. Heck, UTSA here in San Antonio won't have a football team until 2011, yet they've hired Larry Coker as their very first head football coach. Yes, THE Larry Coker who in 6 years at the University of Miami led the hurricanes to 3 Big East Titles and the National Championship in 2001. The 'Canes finished each season, on average, with a 10-3 record under Coker during those 6 years. Obviously, UTSA is not afraid to pay for the services of a top-quality coach. If UTSA can hire someone of Coker's caliber without even having a football team, why can't UTEP hire Mike Leach?
