Craig James is one of the two most prominent players for SMU when that school got the "Death Penalty" for allegedly paying money to players. See:

TTU Athletic Director Gerald Myers has been smoldering since Leach's contract negotiations last winter when Leach held out, demanding the right to negotiate with other teams without Myers participation or knowledge.
AD Myers is a control freak who demands total capitulation by coaches, a position rebellious Leach is not prone to assume. Myers will get into the spotlight one way another.

This may cost Tech a lot of money. Leach is a lawyer himself who knows something about the Constitution, Contract Law and Due Process.

First, Myers demanded that Leach apologize for his treatment of Adam James and when he failed to do so, he and good-old-boy former Congressman Kent Hance who is chancellor, suspended him. Forcing an apology and/or suspending a coach is a disciplinary action--both taken by Myers and Hance without the due process of completing an investigation. Myers wanted to keep the James family happy so he could get the spotlight of the media (ESPN, Craig James' employer) focused upon himself.

Last February Myers called a news conference in which he led reporters to believe that the firing of Leach was imminent. It had to do with cost overruns in the athletic budget. He had not fully discussed the affair with Leach nor tried to settle it internally before calling in the reporters.

Myers played mediocre basketball at mediocre Tech and was a coach of mediocre quality at some Baptist college in the Houston area before coming back to coach at Tech where he was a bargain, but not a success. He comes from Borger, one of two Texas towns so crooked that they were once taken over by the Texas Rangers.

Leach has outsmarted and foiled Myers maliciousness at every turn, but the AD seems out to get him at all costs. The cost may be high, and a lot of heads besides Leach's might roll before this is all over with.
