How do guys like Carmelo, Kevin Durant, and Michael Beasley ever leave the state? Any thoughts?

Is there an alternate reality that surrounds the Terps? They just got dumped by BC and some of them have the stones to talk about winning the NIT? Next thing you know, some of them will be looking their their diplomas. Which pipe dream is bigger is an interesting choice. I'd wager on the NIT championship versus anyone graduating. Most of them have had a basketball in their hands this year, I couldn't say the same about a textbook.

durant's mother wanted him out of the area..it wouldn't surprise me that carmelo and beasley would not have the grades to go to md. it's much easier for big east teams and big 12 teams to recruit because their leagues and school require a lot less in academics from incoming players.

Great question. Let's consider other Marylanders who have gotten away recently:
Rudy Gay
Josh Boone
Joey Dorsey
Mark Karcher
Donte Greene
DeJuan Summers
Melvin Scott
Joe Alexander (West Virginia)
Michael Sweetney
With the exception of Scott, these are ALL first or second round actual or projected picks. This is unacceptable. Fortunately, Booth is on board and may be able to tap the Baltimore talent. Williams constantly gets beat by better recruiters. This isn't as much as x's and o's game as it is about getting the horses.
Can anyone else come up with top talent Gary has lost??

Debbie Yow is kicking the bad results of Gary's program immediately after the new contract in 2005 but there is hope.
I believe he is done next year. Lets hope!

Basketball Coach Gary Williams Signs New Contract
Deal could extend Williams' tenure until 2013

Dec. 19, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--- University of Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams, who led the Terps to the 2002 National Championship and the 2004 ACC Championship, has signed a new contract which significantly enhances the guaranteed financial terms of his previous agreement, Maryland Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow announced today.

In addition, the bonus portions of the new contract now include considerably enhanced amounts for academic achievement and competitive excellence. Academic bonuses may be earned when specific graduation rate percentages are achieved. The competitive bonuses are tied to ACC regular-season accomplishments.

Williams will earn a guaranteed annual salary of $1.6 million for 2005-06. If all academic and athletic incentives were met, Williams would earn the maximum possible compensation of $2.3 million for the current fiscal year.

"We are pleased to further recognize Gary's coaching achievements on behalf of Maryland men's basketball," said Yow. "This new contract ensures that his compensation will be commensurate to that of the most highly-achieving coaches in the nation for the foreseeable future.

"This season promises to be a special one as four seniors try to lead us back to the NCAA Tournament and pursue another ACC Championship."

The new contract also allows for up to four years extension if baseline academic and competitive benchmarks are met in each of the remaining four years of the current 10-year deal, which runs through May 31, 2009. The extension could expand the terms of the deal to May 31, 2013.

Williams' contract will be extended by one year (past May, 2009) when Maryland is selected for the NCAA Tournament and either the team achieves the annual NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) cut score or the scholarship student-athletes on the basketball team earn an average of 27 academic credits per year.

The NIT is about all they deserve. As a long time Terp fan, I have found them difficult to watch this season. Turning the ball over way too much, blowing big leads. That's not what I've grown accustomed to. We need a point guard who can play within his ability, and not commit turnover after turnover. Better luck next year

The cHokies don't deserve it either. Weak schedule should not put them in over UMD event though UMD could not beat them.

Who care, simple as that. The team does not deserve to go anywhere. Vasquez is a team killer and Hayes is in another world. I wouldn't be surprise if he goes somewhere else after this year. They better get a guard, they don't need one who makes super plays but has 8 turnovers a game. This was the most frustrating year I have every seen. Very disappointing watching them. This is more disapointing than Mike Preston's column and you know how I feel about him.

Chuck, is it true that the NIT is being renamed the "Gary Williams Invitational"?

The season was much like the Arab/Israeli conflict, although there weren't any Jews involved.

I'm a fan.....what can I say. I'll be watching the boys play....hopefully better. I think it's time to get back to basics. Stop forcing the ball inside when nobody's open. Good passes not lazy ones. Rebound, rebound, rebound. Drive in and kick it back out for some more three point shots. Last but not lease, never give up. Clemson didn't.... GOOOOOOOO TERPS !!!!!
