A very fair assessment of the team at this point in the season. Thanks for writing about them - I felt that a lot of people wrote them off after early-season woes, but they really are a lot more complex and now, after the last two games, people across the country are starting to see that.

should've could've would've
the game earned its advertising dollars..hope it can earn some looks by higher quality recruits
dook can win it all with that goofy offense of theirs it was more fun watching Maryland run their offense than whatever that pin ball offense of dook is

Rick,

I can't believe I am saying this to you, but great column!! Great evaluation of the Terps so far. Let's hope they can pull it together and get into the tourny!!!

This should also tell us that the difference between a "lowly" team such as American and a "great" team such as North Carolina is miniscule.

If half of the mid-majors had the OPPORTUNITY to just play as many "major" teams, much less at home, they would be falling even more than they are now.

Someday, Maryland will get the 5 Start recruits it needs to compete in the ACC and for another championship. But not under this coach. They just don't wan to play for Gary. Would you?

How many times over the past 5 years do we have to hear: "we just didn't play hard" or "we lacked intensity" or blah blah blah.

This is an old record that needs to be thrown out with the trash.

BTW, Did you notice MD stopped getting decent recruits when Billy Hahn left?

And don't get me started about the Illinois connection and its affects on Ralph's pathological inability to aquire talent.

New blood please.

you notice the same weasels next to the weasel they have been at dook a long time..they fear the tommy amaker route but they add consistency to recruiting..billy, jimmy and dave did a great job recruiting billy did a great job being a pal to the recruits...huggins and billy will be recruiting this area heavily and they will beat out Gtown and Terps

Jake,

You mentioned 2 head coaches that will "out recruit" Maryland. Right on! Marylands head coach DOES NOT RECRUIT!!! He cashed in his 2002 chips in the hopes it would buy him another 10 years.

Maryland can't get those recruits because all they want to do is one-and-done. Our graduation rate has to improve. Other head coaches don't seem to care, but just wait until the grad rates start to come out and coaches like Thad Matta, Rick Barnes and Tim Floyd lose scholarships.

As a lifelong Terps fan, my pressing issue with this team has been the point guard play. Simply put -- Vasquez is not a point guard. He commits way too many turnovers, makes careless passes, and is a below average ball handler. Moving Vasquez to the 2 or 3 would allow him to utilize his ability to slash/cut to the hoop and find holes in the defense.

The recruting is not as awful as some think (RICK TERP) It's known at UMD it takes time to develop players and Gary doesn't jump on a one season wonder. I was at the game, and talent wise I could not see any superiority in the blue jerseys. They got more loose balls in the 2nd half and didn't make the stupid turnovers the Terps did. UNC definatley more talent and we stayed with them for 40 minutes.

YES Vasquez is not a true point guard...honestly he drives me crazy with his play. He is beyond careless.

Vassh++ can't defend, can't dribble penetrate, won't rebound, and is mentally unfit to be point guard
Name me one other point guard in the last 20 years who is worst than GV..I can't think of any even terrel stokes kept his head on his shoulders...the guy needs to go back to his country and play professional for them and move hayes to point and let him develop ala stevie blake

Gary can't get the talent...he goes for transfers that have 2 years of elibility. You are still living that Carolina game and I guess you will be living it till next season. Just face the facts that your terps got beat by a better team with more talent and stop with your dumb excuses. You are a poor loser who has no ability to have a rationale thought when it comes to MD. And certainly not a rationale thought when talking about Duke. I got an idea. Why don't you stop posting comments since you can't make an effective arguement. You add no value to this discussion board!

I love the Terps, thats my team. Gary Williams needs to make better adjustments that all period. He has the talent to compete with any team in the country. I agree Vasquez is not the best option for point, but come late in the season he will hard to stop. Duke will not beat Maryland twice and Vasquez will have another good time in Duke country. This is a dangerous team and will challenge for the FINAL 4, just like Mason did a few years back. Oh by the way they will go on a serious winning streak in the ACC. There is no team that can really beat them with the exeption of a terrible DUKE offense that is something you play on the street. They don't see NC again, and everyone else in the ACC is in danger of Fearing the Turtle.

I don't know Steve. I am a huge Terps fan, but challenge for the final 4? I think right now we just have to hope that they get into the tourny.
