How come Gary still has a job. Nothing has been accomplished since the championship season and perhaps it is time for a change. Seems that the football and basketball teams can not build upon anything and that mediocrity is all we can hope for in this sports. Go Lady Terps.

Thank you Tom. Been saying the same thing seems like forever. This guy is terrible. Has anybody heard from Rich from Westminster? Its time to talk Maryland Men's basketball and the great coaching of Gary Williams....

this terp team does not deserve a ncaa bid. they have done nothing to prove their case. they are poorly coached, erratic, leaderless.

Gary has not transitioned well in an era where he shies away from 1-and-done talent.

After the championship, the Comcast Center was built to attract more talent. Ironic how that worked out?

Anyways - there have been misses in recruiting - where Ibekwe, Garrison, Jones, Gilchrist were all big-time recruits. Misses also include Gay, Dyson, and this year, Jennings - who spurned Gary for other programs.

All I have to say is that after the championship - what is the key problem? His assts are all gone - and we have as many NIT bids as we have arest warrants for the Terp kids this decade.

Is Gary simply living off his past? If he is, the future remains the same.

Gary is a Hall of Fame coach. The overwhelming majority of his kids are significantly better the day they leave Maryland than the day they arrived. The problem of course is Gary is a very mediocre recruiter. There's only so much you can do with so so talent.

we have had our fun in the sun or at least I have...turtleu is heading into the dark years again in bball..they will try to resurrect again in 5-10 but yow won't be the architect
one thing though we used to win the carmichael cup every fricking year yow has yet to get us overall acc supremacy on all sports..although congrats to wrestlers I was there in 1973 when the won the 19th acc championship in a row..

"The overwhelming majority of his kids are significantly better the day they leave Maryland..."

Except for the fact they don't graduate.

Gary has only himself to blame for a lack of bench. Instead of pushing them when they made a mistake, he seemed to always quickly remove them from the game removing what little confidence they may have had. He relies totally on 3 players and no one on the team has any idea how to hit the open man. Besides all these "minor" issues, they are in dire need of a point guard and a small forward. As we have become accustomed to saying, "Wait until next year".

Does anyone think that Gary's sideline demeanor scares away the top recruits? He still screams at his players on the sideline... he really hasn't calmed down in years. If you look at Duke's coach (can't spell his name), he seems to treat his players with much more dignity and respect. Just a thought.

Wooden, Rupp, Smith, Knight and "K" are Hall of Fame coaches. Last time I checked Gary Williams, wasn't listed. I have't checked the New Jersey High School Hall of Fame, so maybe he is a HOF coach. Remove the Juan Dixon years and what do you have? Nothing worthy of the Hall of Fame. HOF coaches don't lose to Santa Clara, the College of Charleston or Butler in the NCAA's. HOF coaches don't lose to American or Ohio U. at home.

Rick...nice article. As for the Gary bashers, I hope you remember what you said next year...the team is currently LOADED with young talent..and has one of the top recruiting classes coming in next year...not bad for a coach that can't recruit!

It's really time for Gary Williams to go.
Year after year it's the same bad results.
And the constant yelling on the bench cannot be a positive thing for possible UMD recruits.
New coach please.

UMaryland had 'one of the top recruiting classes' the year after they won the title in 2002, also. And how did that work out?

Gary did a great job getting turtleu through some dog meat years...he was able to come to closure with final fours and a national championship he is not the type of coach that can maintain he is a builder and a darn good we thank him for that and now ask that he step down and give the program and his alma mater the chance to move up the next step of consistent and forever being in the top 25!

You must write letters to Moten and Yow expressing your concerns..believe or not they are read and many time responded to if you do them professionally.
Gary has go campaign must be grassroots and gather momentum thru the donors

two schools of thought -(1) they are young and we have experience..(2) we have a bunch of mediocre players - ie, the yrs that Caner-Medley's teams never got much better.

When Gist and Osby leave - will any of these guys be able to step up? Time will tell.

What a shame that this Gary bashing continues. Only Duke has won more ACC games during Gary's tenure yet he is repeatedly bashed. They never have a terrible year and always finish in the top half of the league. What else do you want from the guy? people never realize how good things are until they go sour. These same people were probably the ones calling for Gary's head in the late 1990's.

This team has already done more than I thought they would this year and because of their youth. Wonder what some of these people will say in 2 years when this team that is loaded with young talent is competing for a national championship.

Frankly, the only change they need to make a run in this year's ACC tourney is to move Vasquez from point guard to small forward. His passion is needed on the court, but he is too loose with the ball and too out of control at times to play point guard.
