The biggest surprise/disappointment this year so far that I've observed has been the senior leadership and performance of Gist. Where is he? This is a player that Gary described as a freshman, "as much potential as any player I've coached." (good thing he only said potential) It doesn't seem like he's playing with a sense of urgency, where he demands the rock down low, to take it to the hoop and lead his team to victory. You win with players, and experience, and Gist has hardly shown improvement over the last 3 years. Too bad...

Vasquez is too slow, I don't remember him being that slow last year. Did he get too big headed playing against NBA stars this summer to really play Defense? If he doesn't start to play better D we're in for a long year.

Does Gary teach these guys to take bad shots? The bench coaching of this game was awful. At what point do you quit pressing a team that beats your press for easy shots nearly every time down the floor. At what point do you decide to go to a man defense when the zone has held their star scorer scoreless? A bad team, badly coached last night.

Again, Gary Williams fields a team that can't shoot a lick as he leads his team to the bottome of the conference. Why is Williams apparently the only coach in the couintry who can't ever recruite a 3-point shooter? He can sure find guys who throw the ball away though.

Perhaps he simply doesn't understand that today's college game is a guards game. Someonme needs to tell him that 3 points is 50% more than two points! With his team down by 7 point with less than 2 minutes to play, his guys are driving the lane for short jumpers. That's crazy. Oh, I forgot, he has no one who can shoot from 19 ft! Of course James Gist is out there trying. This is not a well coached team.

T. Moschetti class of 67'(during which time Williams was a guard who couldn't shoot a lick)

TonyM...Gary can't ever recruit a 3 point shooter? Perhaps you're a new Terps fan....did you forget about Mike Jones, Drew Nicholas, or Juan Dixon, of recent? True, they can't shoot this year, but Gary's brought in some good shooters. This year's team is lacking senior or seasoned veteran leadership more than anything. They're a young team.

3 points is 50% more than 2 points?? Can you explain how that works?

I am Far from a Math genius, but that makes no sense.

Back to the Game, The terps are very young. I agree that Gist needs to be the leader. Vasquez needs to shut his trap and play harder. Emotions are good, out of control is bad.

Eric Hayes is supposed to be a great shooter, and Vasquez is supposed to be a good shooter. They have not shown it yet this year.

I guess that 50% more is correct, the more I think on it. 100% more than 2 points would be 4 points.......

It just sounds funny. But now looking back it seems correct. I think.

I think you MD fans have to come to the realization that you didn't play any worse this game than you would have normally, but the fact of the matter: VCU is the superior team. They outplayed them athletically, talent-wise, and were coached better. Anthony Grant is one of the best coaches in college basketball.

TonyM, you're right on the money. And, Rich, Mike Jones? Drew Nicholas? Those were really go-to guys? C'mon. Dixon and Blake were the last legit outside shoooters Md had. NC, Duke, etc. ALWAYS have two, three, four guys who can nail 3's. Gary? He's lucky to have one. Vasquez and Hayes are awful guards. No playmaking ability other than throwing the ball away or clanging shots. Sorry, gang, but this is going to be a very, very long season with no dance at the end.

Vasquez needs to calm down and slow down. Whenever someone scores on him he takes the ball without looking to pass and attempts a shot no matter what. I was at the game last night and he must have had 7 turnovers. And wasn't Hayes supposed to be the PG? Everytime VCU pressured him, he gave the ball up to a big guy who got it stolen.

Did Vasquez regress or am I just being too critical. I know he was out of control some last year, but he also made some huge contributions. It seems like he's out of control all the time now.

Let Gist come off the bench, start the young post players and let's build for next year.

"realization" is at least partly correct; VCU is a good team and anyone who saw what they did to Duke in last year's tournament, coupled with Maryland's typically anemic performance in BB&T games, figured the Terps were in for a rough night.

I too am disappointed in Vasquez's play so far. I see shades of two dubious former Terps:

1--Nick Caner Medley: Fast start as a freshman, becoming a crowd favorite followed by 3 long years of regression.

2--Gilchrist: A bit of a hothead.

Let's hope at least he doesn't think he knows better than Gary.
