What is the big deal??! Morgan has EARNED a trip to the NIT tournament! It is a team that does not play consistently at a high level. The real question is what is wrong with the recruiting??? After winning a national championship, why hasn't more talented players come to Maryland to play for Gary Williams? Talent is either there or it isn' can't coach it!

Gary, if you want respect in the ACC you dont want to be hanging NIT Championship Banners. We have not finished in the top 2 in the ACC since the NC year. That is a whole recruiting cycle.

The topic of Terps as a quality team is purely mental gymnastics. A "showcase for James",(Gist). Are you kidding me!
We will see about James after a couple of seasons of Pro ball in Greece...The only thing worse than the last 3 weeks for MD hoops will be the terps loafing thru a game in the NIT.

Gist is not a NBA factor peroid. Look for a 1st round loss in the NIT regardless of the matchup.

Look, playing in the NIT is not a disgrace. There are, what, 340 Div I teams? 65 go to the NCAA, 32 more into the NIT. That's better than a sub-.500 season. There are quite a few ACC teams that go to the NIT, and a few that have hung NIT banners in their stadiums, such as Virginia and N.C. State--and the Terps. It's not the NCAA, but it might be where a team with this talent level needs to go to build for a more sucessful future. And there will be a more successful future if everyone quits being a jerk about this and plays basketball. We're not Duke and we're not North Carolina. But if we're smart, we can be Number 3 in the ACC.

This season should be remembered by the Terps inability to minimize turnovers. When Clemson blew out BC last night, their team had 9 total turnovers. Their starting guards combined for 1 turnover. MD had 21 total turnovers against BC, and Hayes and Vasquez combined for 10 (more than the total of Clemson last night!) Teams that won yesterday, like Duke and UNC, also had only 12-13 turnovers total. Vasquez and Hayes have been turnover machines of late (Vasquez always) If they'd hold on to the ball better, I bet the Terps would have won at least 5 more games and been in the big dance...

Why do the Terps even think they'll be in the NIT? They don't deserve it.

Maybe the coaches at UMBC can give Gary some hints on how to get to the NCAA..........

UMBC supporters should do their research before poking jeers at the UMCP program. This abysmal Terrapins season have earned them an RPI number of 81, which is still 10 spots higher than that of UMBC's. And SOS? UMCP-26, UMBC-270. And while UMBC is going to the big dance, they are likely to get a 15 or 16 seed. There have only been four instances in which a #15 seed upset a #2 seed, and never has a #1 lost in the first round. Don't be surprised if the Retrievers make an early exit from the tourney, while the Terrapins are still playing ball in the NIT. Comparing these two programs is like comparing a Lexus that needs a tune up with a Hoopty that was recently washed and waxed.

Or maybe a Lexus with a cracked block that's being towed with a Hoopty that's going to the big dance. I feel sorry for Twerps fans.

GAB, you said "We're not Duke and we're not North Carolina. But if we're smart, we can be Number 3 in the ACC."
Why do we have to be 3rd? North Carolina went through a slump when they had Matt Doherty as their head coach, but they've turned it around by hiring Roy Williams and are back at the top of the heap.
Duke has been near the top because of great coaching and recruiting. It seems like Coach K has been there forever, and that's because he's successful. If Gary had a half a dozen McDonald All-Americans every year, he might be successful too. But then again, maybe not. LOL.
Maryland has some obvious problems that need fixed - whether it be coaching or recruiting. It all starts at the top and it's time for some changes.

Underachiever - Gary has tried to bring in McDonalds All Americans without any success. The 2002 recruiting class had the potential of making another national championship run, but we all saw how that turned out. Mike Jones was a 5-star McDonalds All-American coming out of high school. He started many games for the Terps, but I consider him more of a 6th man than starting material. And let's not talk about Travis Garrison, who may have been the biggest Maryland bust in history.
Coaching might be the issue at heart. Gary has lost it when it comes to motivating his players. It wasn't reported in any major newspaper that I read, but the reason why the Terps lost to Manhattan in the first round of the 2006 NIT was because several of the players had bought plane tickets to Florida for spring break prior to receiving an invitation. When the players were asked by Gary if they wanted to participate, many had said no. It was the athletic director, Debbie Yow, that made the final call and forced the game to be played.
