Purdue gets short shrift in NCAA tournament

Full story: Chicago Tribune

The Big Ten doesn't have to apologize for anything. It shouldn't have to explain itself, defend itself or just get it over with and kill itself.

I was ok with the 5th seed. Purdue will do fine. They had a rough year with injuries and lost some tough games.

Good article Rick. You remind me of Telander. Anyway, yes, Purdue is a great team, but also prime for an upset in the 2nd round. Wait for it...

Purdue is not a great team, they are a good team on a hot streak. So what do they deserve, a 4 seed instead of a 5. Big deal. It's not that scientific. 7 teams overall, Michigan State gets a 2, even tho they stumbled in the conf tourney, Illinois a 5. How is that disprespect? This was a whining piece of victimization. If Purdue doesn't get into the round of 16 or deeper, there should be an 'I'm An Idiot' followup.

Purdue was ranked 24th in both polls going into this weekend, which would put them as roughly the worst 6 seed. So them getting a 5 seed is an improvement for them. You can't expect them to move 8 spots to get a 4 seed. They had 30 plus games this season, so if they wanted a higher seed, they should have done better.

Both incessant whinin', booin' Illinois and Purdue ARE the hands-on
favorites of Chicagoland & Northern
Indiana-based Mr. Magoo Big Ten refs,
who award them countless "no calls"--
both home and away. Still, evermore
they pile on excuse after excuse,
and shoulda', coulda' woulda' disrespect for their fella' competitors!!!
Surely, OSU's Evan Turner did not
perform as the TRUE Big Ten Tourney MVP, eh? Nor, was Turner the TRUE Conference MVP, eh?
Enuff.

As a sports conference, the Big Ten has lost any importance it once had on a national level. It's almost as laughable as the Bears, Bulls and Cubs.

Look for maybe one Big Ten team - at most - to make it past the second round.

Agree 100%.... and I'm not sure that Purdue is even a GOOD team. I predict they'll be "one and done". Look for UNI to get past the Boilers.

Seven teams in the NCAA is about 2 too many (Minnesota and Michigan??? Get real!) This has become more of a "who can bring in lots of fan money to the money grubbing hustlers" instead of a tourney to see the best teams, otherwise Arizona would be out and St. Mary would be in.

...... and you could probably make a case for bumping Wisconsin out of the NCAA as well. Congrats to Northwestern and Illinois State for making the NIT.

They are crying over Purdue winning the Big 10 tournament and getting a #5 seed. Imagine how Mississippi State feels in winning 4 games in 4 days to win the SEC tournament and they get a #13 seed.

If everybody feels miffed, sounds like the committee did a decent job.

Every team now controls their own fate. Just win your next 6 games and everything will be better.

" Big Ten doesn't get the respect it deserves". You've got to be freaking kidding me. 7 teams, one with 13 losses and you're complaining. How about the SEC with 3? How about only 4 mid-majors? And your solitciting for a Penn St. who had the 311th ranked non conf. schedule. Obviously the NCAA decided this would be a 4 conf. tourney, so there's no way any of those four conf. should have any complaints, and certainly not the Big 10. 7 out of 11 teams, unbelievable. And you're whining about no respect Morrisey. What a joke!!!!

You see Folks!!!

Tribune writing an article of an out of school.. Feeling sorry for them.

Same Writer wrote an insanity article on Illini,

Greg Couch and Rick are jealous and burning because of great recruiting class coming to Illini.

Want to find a "Any" reason to put Illini on NCAA probation...So that Illini our state school is put in embarassing situation.

Eric Gorodn- Indiana? what happened?
Fab five - Michigan? what happened?
Iowa - what happened?
Yes ND - Under the rug hush money by Secretary that is still big fiasco?

Folks these writers are biggest joke and part of propaganda?
Wonder whats happening behind the scene?

As a HUGE Syracuse fan living in the Chicago area, I have to defend the Big East. I will start by saying that I was stunned to see Purdue get a 5 seed. Should have been at least a 4, maybe even a 3, taking Syracuse's 3. SU had an amazing tournament but is over seeded. That being said there's no reason SU can't make a deep run starting this week.

HOWEVER, I must argue vehemently against Morrissey saying the Big Ten is better from top to bottom. Put the top 8 teams in each conference against each other...it'll be a bloodbath. Michigan St. and Purdue are very solid, above average teams, but will have an incredibly tough time beating Pitt or UConn. Illinois vs. Louisville? Please. L'ville did lose in December to Minnesota, a blip on the radar screen to a team that was simply out of wack at the time. L'ville would beat Minnesota 8 out of 10 times if it came to that. Marquette, Villanova, West Virginia and Syracuse can match up easily against Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State/Minnesota anytime. Northwestern vs. a Providence or Georgetown or Notre Dame? N'western had a good year, but i'd still take the Hoyas or the Irish despite them both having bad years. Cincinnati isn't bad either. Morrissey, get with it and stop with the homer comments. You can act sick & tired of the Big East bias but the fact is that the conference is for real whether you like to admit it or not.

I think the Big 10 got some love. I don't know how Minnesota, Wisconsin got in. Take these two teams out, put in St. Mary's and Creighton. Take out Maryland...7-9 ACC conference record should not be rewarded, period.

The Big East has 7 NCAA tournament bids out of 16 teams. The Big Ten has 7 NCAA tournament bids out of 11 teams. The Big East is very strong at the top but very weak at the bottom. It's disingenous to compare the top 8 teams out of 16-team conference (versus an 11-team conference) and claim that it's a top-to-bottom comparison. It's not.

Who cares where you are seeded? All you need to do in win. UNC and Duke are everyone's boyfriends anyway. Do they ever have to travel? When they lose, they drop only slightly in the polls.

I should probably give a break to the guys who are saying the Big 10 didn't deserve 7 teams and that those 7 teams will perform so poorly. I'm sure they've all listened to a lot of ESPN's "experts" and not watched any actual games.
Any team in the Big 10, with the exception of Indiana, had the potential to beat any other Big 10 team this year. There were no easy road wins, again with the exception of Indiana. That doesn't mean the conference is bad, it means it has considerable depth, and that any team who survived the conference schedule with a .500 record or better deserves to be in the tourney.
The Big 10 will do fine. Probably only MSU and Purdue have reasonable shots at the Final 4, but all 5 of the others have a chance to make some noise. I say at least 3 teams in the sweet 16.
