I disagree. UTEP SHOULD NOT hire Bob Marlin. His name is always being heard amongst interviews and if he is hired and has a good season next year he too will be out the door. Tim Floyd or Randall Dickey would be the right hire at this time.

I think that Gillespie would be a good choice. I think that if he comes here he wont leave quickly because he has to rebuild himself after Kentucky. I also think Floyd would be great as well he is a great coach and I don't see him leaving here. By the way Nolan Richardson is the head coach of a WNBA team in Tulsa so I doubt he would leave a pro job for UTEP

Hey Bob,
Jay Johnsco is zaaaa bommmm.
I've earned the right to say UTEP should hire Tom Penders. I work with an International Corporation for External Relations and am the Executive Senior Vice President, you on the other hand are a douche nut.

Good luck to Coach Barbee.$1.4 mil, up from 200k? Easy choice. There are no more Haskins's in the world and you can't blame Barbee. He did what he set out to do here. I am not sure I agree with how he told his players he was moving on, but apparently the time was right. Notice how the play level dropped off after they found out? Good job, Coach. Way to keep 'em motivated. You got your butt out-coached in by Penders and Stevens, so you'd better get it together before SEC ball rolls around... hope you enjoyed your short stint in the Tourney this year, because next year you won't be there...

Anyhow, I am ready for a change and Tim Floyd would be the best choice -- a proven leader, at both college and Pro levels and a guy who already knows El Paso and how to recruit winners. If he's hired, he'll be able to improve the team in a number of ways -- given that they remain intact (with or without DC). Come on home Coach Floyd!

DC, it's been fun watching you play, but you're NOT ready for the NBA. Give it another year, big fella!

Arnett and the rest of the gang, stick around. Next year will be special with, or without TB and DC. Let's hope the recruits will keep their commitments -- especially Bohannon!

Go Miners!

Another administrator with a title and an ego but little common sense. Typical.

P.S. Jay, when did the spelling of the word "bomb" change to "bommmm"? I'd bet you're nothing more than a burger-flipping college puke who made that title up. Sure sounds suspect.

Wow,who wouldn't turn down $1.4 million a year with a new $92 million dollar stadium. You can't blame Barbee one bit. There are not many universities who can offer that to a coach. That's a dream job for a coach to have that kind of stadium with that kind of money. Give Barbee credit,he did have a better winning record four years in a row.

They should be able to find a new and good coach pretty fast. They won the conference and made it to the ncaa tournament and should have all if not most of the same team next year. What coach looking or interested in the job at Utep wouldn't want to have a team like this to start his first season at Utep.

As a former El Pasoan and UTEP Alum, my personal preference has always been Nolan Richardson. However, I also am familiar with the reality of UTEP athletics and Bob Stull as the athletic director, and the bottom line is that Stull hires who the big athletic boosters direct him to hire. These same boosters want a coach who will act within the parameters that they set down for a coach, particularly if he is a minority. They can care less about who the community wants. This is why these same boosters directed Stull to hire Sadler over community favorite Sergio Rocco (Rocco being a Cuban American also influenced their decision, as Cubanos typically tend to be very outspoken and this likely concerned major boosters with a need to control minority candidates being considered for head coaching positions). Simply put, Stull and his puppeteers know that they will never be able to control Nolan, particularly considering the fact that he is so outspoken against the evils of racism, particularly in college athletics. Also don't forget that when Barbee was hired four years ago as UTEP's head basketball coach, Stull never even interviewed Nolan for the position, but he made darn sure that he mentioned Nolan's name to the media as a prospective candidate as a means of pacifying those in the community who backed Nolan. In spite of his impressive accomplishments as a head basketball coach, Nolan never stood a chance of being hired 4 years ago at UTEP, and he has an even slimmer chance of now being seriously considered as Barbee's replacement, particularly considering that Nolan recently released his book on racism and college athletics. Nolan has a better chance of winning the lottery than ever coaching at UTEP.

Therefore, if UTEP can hook onto Billy Gillespie, he would be the next best candidate. Not since the days of Gillespie has UTEP consistently filled the stands at the Don. Neither Doc "Gunsmoke" Sadler nor Tony Barbee was ever able to fill the Don like Billy did. Check the numbers Stull, they don't lie. El Pasoans loved Billy (and many still do, after seeing how well he was received at Don Haskins' memorial service at the Don), however, many were also angry like a jealous girl friend when Billy left for another suitor at A & M. Just like Barbee, Billy left for the money. Who wouldn't? Just beware, if Billy gets the job at UTEP, based on his track record expect him to leave after 2 to 3 years maximum. While certainly both Nolan and Billy would no doubt be successful at coaching at UTEP and would also fill the stands at the Don, unlike Billy, Nolan would be around for as long as he can coach. This is why Nolan is my #1 choice. One final thing to remember, when Billy had his first press conference at A & M, he went out of his way to acknowledge UTEP and thank El Paso. I bet you the farm that later today at Barbee's press conference at Auburn, not a word will be uttered about either UTEP or El Paso. Let's face it, many El Pasoans miss the heck out of Billy Gillespie and the excitement he brought to Miner basketball. Sadler was quickly forgotten and he is not missed at all. The same will generally hold true for Barbee. Miner fans, hang in there after losing coach Barbee. You are like the jilted boyfriend, now alone with a broken heart, but not for long. Sort of reminds me of that old Marshall Tucker Band song,“This Ol’ Cowboy”:“… there’s one thing in life that ain’t hard for me to do,… that’s as soon as I kiss the lips of another woman, I’m gonna forget all about you.”
