Sources: Greg Zipadelli back as directorEmailPrintComments2By Marty Smith
ESPN.com
Archive Despite winning the 2011 Sprint Cup championship, Tony Stewart is not resting. He instead continues to add key personnel to Stewart Haas Racing.

Greg Zipadelli, the crew chief who paired with Stewart to win the 2002 and 2005 series championships, will reunite with his former driver at SHR in 2012 as the organization's competition director, multiple industry sources told ESPN.com Friday.

The team had been without a competition director since it released Bobby Hutchens in June. Zipadelli, sources said, was granted a release from his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing and will move immediately to SHR.

At Stewart Haas Racing, Zipadelli will oversee building Danica Patrick's team as she debuts in the Sprint Cup Series on a part-time basis in 2012, though it is unknown at this time who will serve as her crew chief, sources said.

Neither SHR nor JGR officials immediately returned requests for comment Friday morning.

Two weeks ago it was announced that Steve Addington will serve as Stewart's crew chief next season, while Darian Grubb, who directed Stewart's team to the 2011 Sprint Cup title, will move to JGR as Denny Hamlin's crew chief.

Zipadelli had been the crew chief of the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 car since Stewart's rookie year in 1999.

YEAH!!! I wonder.... did Tony give up Darian to JGR to get them to let Zippy out of his contract???? was it quid pro quo?
But WONDERFUL!!! Tony has his dream team now and Zippy will get his wish to be able to stay in the garage after he gets Danica rolling.
Watch out NASCAR... there is no stopping Tony now... LOL.. but after what he did for the sport this year,, making it EXCITING once again... he deserves to have his dream come true

Excellent point Debi. I know you're happy about this - I'm skeptical - and I were Steve Addington I wouldn't unpack.

agree....still don't think this is going to work out with Zippy and Tony either....regardless of their friendship, Tony still signs the checks. But perhaps Zippy can whomp him up along side the head when he's acting like an idiot.

Tony is the most loyal person in all of NASCAR.. he does not EVER forget and he holds dear all who helped him out and helped him up... Tony wanted to take Zippy with him when he went to SHR.. who knows if Zippy wanted to go then but Joe said no... Tony did manage to get Zippy before his contract is up.. I appreciate Joe letting Zippy go.. Zippy is a big brother to Tony and proof that they stayed close through Tony leaving JGR is proof that they will indeed still be close and good together.. as for Addington.. I have always liked him,, when he was with Kyle I liked him and when he left JGR I wished Tony would have snatched him up then., I am glad whatever kind of agreement Tony had with HMS till he got to get his own guys back has let him build his own team up.. but now Tony has the guy back who KNOWS he likes to RACE... not come off pit road with some kind of advantage... Tony doesn't like to win that way and he deserves to be able to race the way it is in his heart and his soul.
besides... maybe Zippy HATED working with Toyotas... maybe he HATED their racing group messing with him and his team. It is good that Zippy gets to get back with GM

Debi do not forget the engines & chassis R Hendricks . Not GM.Lets not forget it will be a whole new game next yr. Engines will be fuel injected & Nascar has changed the rules & I believe more changes to the car.

I think this will be a really good thing for Tony to have Zippy around. I think Tony missed their close friendship even though they did stay friends I don't think they hung out a lot. Tony talked about fishing and doing things with Ryan but I don't think he and Darian ever had that really close friendship and did things together outside of racing. I think Zippy may be one of the few people that can and will put Tony in his place, slap him upside the head when he needs it or tell him like it is.

Wonder if Darian would agree with you?

And I really agree with Cleo on this one. Even if Tony shuffles positions and Zippy is his cc again - it's not the same situation when they both answered to Coach. AWS signs the paychecks now, and he values that even more than winning a championship apparently. Being a family man, I'm surprised Zippy didn't take job security into consideration before agreeing to work for Tony.

Tony doesn't mind overcoming a bad pitstop or two, or racing 3 or 4 wide to pass. Things like that just make the win sweeter and have made him one of the most talented and respected racers in the business.

From Nascar.com , Zippy's comments about being a cc and working for Tony. Looks like he's going into this with eyes wide open. Hope it works out for him.

In fact Zipadelli, 44, who admitted knowing an administrative role was probably in his future, though "this was probably a few years earlier than I wanted to as far as quitting to be a crew chief," said he would gently transition by probably serving as Patrick's crew chief in all 10 of her planned 2012 Cup starts -- for sure at the Daytona test Jan. 12-14 and Patrick's Speedweeks events.

"The biggest thing is this was a new challenge. I've always been the type of person that, I like the next --'what's next'-- the next challenge. I've had a great run at Joe Gibbs Racing. This position had been talked about there but it wasn't going to be available for a while, and when I looked at it I said,'here's one now, for the only person in the sport that I would probably go to work for at this time in my career.'

There's an old saying, "be careful for what you wish for, because you just may get it"...

Going to be interesting. And yes, I hope that Zippy has an ironclad contract, otherwise he too may end up going the road as BH and DG-you know the ones that helped Tony turn around Haas Racing-

Tony stated in an interview he & Darian were a lot closer then he & Zippy . When a race was over Zippy went his own way & Darian & Tony flew home together. You always would see Tony & Darian at Eldora the Pit Crew Challenge so on & so on.I think the mistake Darian & Tony made was getting to close. Plus remember Darian worked for the driver & owner . Zippy worked with only the driver.Big difference big difference.Read any Bio about Nascar drivers & crew chiefs . Every CC that has worked for a driver owner has made the same statement Darion made .They would never work for a driver owner again. it is the job from hell. Read what Jeff Hammond has wrote about being a CC for DW after he became a team owner.Time will tell.

I think what people R forgetting is Tony & Zippy were successful with the old car. Zippy has never won a race with the New car not a real race.( I do not count a rain out & Carl knocking out all the top runners in race a real win) And before people attack . Tony thanked Carl for knocking out all the top running cars at Dega . Tony admitted he would have been lucky to finish in the top 20. J/S

Seems like everybody is so negative about this. You can believe what you want but I still think this is a good thing for Tony and will work out. I believe Tony has more faith in Zippy and vice versa.

ell if Tony gave up Darian he didn't give up much! that was a good swap in books!
Nice of JGR too finally man up and let Zippy go were he wanted. Thats no way for a company to run. That is imprisonment as far as I'm conerned if some one wants out let them out!Only unsecurity makes them not allow it!
