Sterling Marlin is set to try to qualify the 09 car at Talladega this week. I'm not sure I have even a slight idea what the sponsor gets out of trying to enter a handful of races, with an understaffed, underequipped team and no full-time pit crew. They have to beat 5 other non-top 35 teams to get in. I don't know which ones they can beat.

Well, now there are only 46 teams on the entry list, so they only have to be faster than three of the non-top 35 teams to get in. Marlin could do that driving with one hand if they gave him a half-decent car. It's a shame he isn't very interested in big-boy racing any more, because there are some really bad teams that could use a guy who knows his way around a track bigger than a mile. He should be a superspeedway specialist the way Boris Said is a road course guy. I hate to see him just fade out, but he's made his money and I hope he still has a lot of it. I was a huge fan of his when he was in the old No.4 Kodak car, so I'll always wish him well.

Qualifying at Dega: Marlin's qualifying 3rd among go-or-go home cars. His first lap was decent, at 182.9, but he would need at least 3 more mph to qualify. He came up with a 185.3, which temporarily put him in 12th, with 8 more drivers left to qualify. Last year any of the non-top 35 below 9th failed to qualify. He probably won't make it.

Marlin is ahead of Carpentier and Andretti, with 7 cars left to qualify. There are some good cars among those 7, like Nemechek and Franchitti. But there's also Kyle Petty's car, so maybe Sterling has a shot after all!

Kyle Petty just edged out Marlin. There are only 4 cars left to qualify, and all of them are probably better than Marlin's car. Maybe Franchitti will screw up, or Schrader's car will be a tick slower.

Update: both J.J. Yeley and Franchitti were slower than Marlin, so he's in the race! Amazing.

When he gets in the draft he's great, even with a so-so car. After "the big one" tomorrow, if he's still running it would be nice to see a top-10 finish.

I don't know how Marlin went from 30th to 17th on the last lap, but I'll take it. His car was pretty inconsistent, and it seemed he ran out of the draft the whole day, so he never hooked up with anyone to stay in the lead pack. It's tough to run out of the draft at the big tracks. Still, the team has to be pretty happy to get a top 20, I guess.
