He's back in the McClure 09 car this week. Let's see if they give him the same piece of junk and part time crew they threw together the last time he tried to qualify this car. I really don't know why these underfunded teams think they can just show up now and then with a one-car effort and expect to get anything out of it. I'd bet they don't even have a backup car in case this one wrecks or something. It'll be nice to see him try to qualify it, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Probably back to Saturday night dirt track stuff with his kids again next week....sigh..

Well, at least he got his money out of that screwball Ginn. It's funny that even though Sterling hasn't had a full-time ride in a few months he was still something like 40th in points last week. I hate to say it but if he had made a better effort at being a good product spokesman he might still be racing for someone, because the sponsors will take 30th place as long as the driver has a personality that consumers can grab onto. Sterling is just too aw shucks.

What a shock: Sterling not only qualified but was 13th fastest in practice. It would be phenomenal if he could come away with a top 10.

You dumb azz people don't have a clue

the 09 car belongs to James Finch who could prob buy & sell well over half the owners in the garage area... He spends his own money to go racing 90% of the time... He & Sterling are great friends... this is one of those deals where they race because they love to race... check the history on Finch owned cars at the daytona 500... just for the record if you do the math he's made more money per cup race raced this year than anyone in the garage... His cars are not junk they are the best money can buy... yep they lack the support and the tech side but the equipment is on par with 90% of whats in the garage... prety sure Marc Reno is calling the shots... half the garage would hire him if he'd go work for them... so folks know of what you speak before you... speak... if they did away with the top 35 crap be'n locked in... you'd see alot more teams that can be fast show up... the top 35 has outlived being a useful tool... at this point it just rewards being so-so

Funny, but I understand that Finch and McClure switched numbers. McClure is the owner of the 09. Thanks for being so helpful, bt.

I didn't see the start of the race but it appeared Sterling got a lap down in the pits when a yellow came out... he did seem to be as fast as most of the cars out there and just missed getting his lap back a few times... he was the fastest of the lap down cars on any long runs...

still ran better than alot of high dollar teams

The second half of the race, Sterling had a top-ten car, running laps faster than all but the five or six cars at the front. For some reason in the first third of the race his car would go away from him for a couple laps and he was running at least a half to a full second slower than the guys in the middle of the pack. It only takes being 30 seconds behind to get lapped at that track. It was a lot of tough luck for him never being the first lapped car when a caution came out, because if he had caught the Lucky Dog anywhere from the middle of the race to the last quarter of it I think he could have ended up in the top 15. He was running at least 1 to 2 mph faster than a lot of the guys from 10th back for most of the second half. I watch the Race Trax on Fox's web site while the race is running, because it's the only way to follow a car that's not in the top ten (maybe there's some other way, but I haven't found it).

If nothing else, he ran the kind of race that should show some of the teams that he's still a skilled driver. Give him a decent handling car and an experienced pit crew, and he can run you 18 to 20 races next year and keep you doing well on points. He doesn't want to run full-time any more, any way. Good job by him today, I thought.

that was the first COT race Finch has run... so you have to give them props for what they did... I'm sure it was the #1 busch team that prepped and pitted the car...
go back to 1995 or 1996 daytona i think... i get lost on my years... Jeff Purvis in finches cars... won the ARCA race... sat on the pole in the busch car (was faster than the cup pole nascar was not happy) got crashed out of the busch race... finished 12th in the cup race was top 3 with less than 10 laps to go... all with one crew and Marc Reno...
this is what i think will happen in 08 they'll run Daytona with Sterling... if they run well and they usually do... they'll keep running the first 5 races... each one dependant upon the last and how they finished and points... if they can get and stay in the top 35 and get a free pass into the 6th race they'll keep going or "partner" with someone who needs to get into the race... it wasn't but what 3-4 years ago and they didn't have 42 cars showing up... finch was sending Joe Ruttman with a car and 3-4 guys pay'n joe 3k per race... they'd run one set of tires from the time they got there til they ran 2-3 laps then they'd pull in load up and head home collecting last place money which could be 50k or more... they didn't even set up a pit just Joe and the truck driver to load it up and head home... they wouldn't even unload the car before the next race...

I'd kind of liked to see Sterling hook back up with the 4 car for 2008. Morgan McClure just signed Todd Bodine for that car! Goddddam, I'll never forget Sterling running that 4 car at Daytona, first win ever and he wins the big one.... I'd kill to turn the clock by 10 years and put him back in that car. I mean, who digs up Todd Bodine when Sterling is available? I gotta figure this means Sterling is locked in to running the 09 car. Hope they get their spotters and crew on the same page if that's the case. Might turn a few heads if Sterling runs top 10 a few races early in the next season.

If you check... morgan mcclure and fince are very close.... finch after a strong daytona switched "ownership" with the 4 car so that they'd have more points going forward... it didn't help but... it could have...

also note during the time sterling & the 4 car were "fast" Finches cars were also fast...(all restrictor plate races) they had something figured out... simple little thing but no one else had it... even ole DW came and got a hutter motor from Finch in 96 at daytona because he was bad slow... Runt Pittmn was with sterling at the time doing the motors but they were hutter motors..DW just knew it was in that "hutter motor" but he was still slow even with the same motor as pervis... he got the motor but not the trick... the 4 car ain't been much in years... finch has a much better average finish than the 4... on a side note finch really hasn't done alot of cup races since about 96 ran i think 5-6 that year DNQ for indy... was supposed to run an almost full season with Neil Bonnet with country time... when they had the tire war going... that ended up cost us neil during practice... in finches car at daytona... kinda took the wind out of his sail... again it was a friendship thing... I can assure it... Sterling will have more fun be more involved and have better results with finch than just about any other team at this point...

Whatever he does, I'd like to think he's having fun. His whole family has racing in their blood. I always wondered if he was buddies at all with Tony Stewart, because Tony is one of the racingest guys ever. No matter how it all turns out for Sterling, I don't think you'll ever hear too many people say anything negative about him, because he always raced clean. Maybe too clean at times, but some day he'll walk away from all of it with his head up knowing he was one of the guys you just had to like, even if you didn't love him. I'll never forget when he jumped out of the car to try to pull the fender off the tire while they were red-flagged a few years ago. Classic Sterling.
