Marlin will drive the 40 this week. Like old times, I hope. With only 45 entries, he's only got to beat the time of two drivers to make the field. Should be a snap...but still got the fingers crossed.

That's cool. The #40 hasn't done anything since Sterling was let go. Hope he makes the race and gets a good finish.

Well, if history has anything to do with it, and if the 40 car team gives Marlin a good car, he might surprise some people. He's in the top 10 among active drivers in money won at Darlington.

But he's in the top 5 among active drivers in wins, top 5's, and top 10 finishes. He's well suited to the track, and even if his practice speeds weren't great there's plenty of time to adjust between today and qualifying tomorrow. He's won 3 poles in 45 career starts there, so he knows how to qualify.

This is the first time I've been interested like this in at least 4 years.

Now that he has qualified in the 14th spot lets go win the race. Too bad they'll bring back the road racing weenie for the next race.

May Marlin outshine them all again

i am putting marlin on my fantasy team for this week, a veteran at darlington, and in a decent ride compared to the #09, he will do well. Finally chip gave sterling a good car... after they fired him.

Actually, they gave him a good car the year he was leading the points race until that neck injury. I think the injury, combined with the idiot Dale Sr. fans saying he killed Earnhardt, made him a cautious driver and it never mattered after that how good the car was. It was awesome when he was a top 10 driver, but he still has the talent and the experience to run in the top 10 if he picks his tracks and has a decent car and good pit crew. Other than Gordon, Stewart, Edwards and maybe a handful of others, there aren't many drivers out there whose talent makes the difference. No one wins with a junkmobile, no matter how great they can drive.

So much for getting my hopes up. I have no idea whether it was the car or the driver, but the 40 car virtually never ran quickly at Darlington. It posted lap speeds consistently 2 to 3 mph slower than the top 10 drivers, and had at least 2 pit stops that were a mess. Other than that, I don't know what accounts for the poor performance, but once you're more than 10 laps down I think Nascar should let you park the car and take the 36th place points - which is what anyone from 36 to 43 should get so they can get these cars off the track and allow the decent teams to compete without moving obstacles in their way.
Yes, I was disappointed.

This is what Ganassi's web site says about why the 40 car did so poorly last week:

"The car didnít seem to respond to any of the adjustments the team was making and as the night progressed Marlin told his team the heat inside the car was becoming unbearable. The team pitted on lap 250 to give Marlin oxygen and replace the driver cooling system in the car. Marlin rejoined the field 12 laps off the lead lap in 36th place. With less than 100 laps remaining, he held on for a 34th-place finish."

that is just bad luck for Sterling, at the begining of the race, he was hanging in the top 15. Hopefully he can do well later this year with the #09 team in the later races he will run, or maybe the coke 600 if Dario is still injured.
