And it was important to say "banned for life from NASCAR in 2006 after failing three drug tests" why? That has nothing to do with this story. The boy is in critical condition with head injuries. COME ON PEOPLE!!!

Very tacky reporting Fox 8. I have done things in my life that I am not proud of. I would surely hope you wouldn't report those things if I get injured in a wreck.

Unless you have put yourself in the spotlight nothing will be said about your private life, wheather it was today, yesterday, or many years ago.. He put himself out there to make a name for himself and sadly enough this comes with the package. If you want fame you must pay the price good or bad. Great work Fox 8 !!!

Having met Shane on several occassions, with all his problems, he is still a very respectful, kind young man. I have heard he has gotten his life back together and I wish him all the best.

For all of you that are bashing FOX8 for reporting his ban from NASCAR...take note that the story came down from (AP) which means Associated Press. This is a National News Release...most, if not all stations were sent this headline story. If you notice beside each headline it will show the source.

Not many people know that the reason he was doing drugs all those years, is because he was bi-polar and didn't know it. He was trying anything to make himself to feel better. Once he was diagnosed and received the proper medication, he has been drug free and doing well. I'm very proud of him and praying for a full recovery.

I was curious as to why such a young man was no longer racing NASCAR, but instead with a much smaller circuit, and the story answered that question. Thanks for reporting the ENTIRE story. This does NOT mean anyone is judging him, it simply completes the story. Of course, we ALL hope he recovers fully.

Bullsh*t, throwing in the blurp about his suspension was unnessasary and in poor taste under these conditions. It added nothing of revelence to this story.

I agree that the part of why he wa banned completed the story. I hate that it had to be in the same story as a report on his crash and injuries. My prayers are with him and his family.

waitaminute has this right. Shane Hmiel is a public sports figure. His ban from Nascar is relevant to the story and is background to explain why he's in some obscur league of racing after driving in the big boy series.

Anna clearly illustrates why he was banned from Nascar. "He was trying anything to make himself feel better." 175mph with 42 other drivers and on drugs is just plain stupid. He risked every competitor's life just to "feel better". I don't care if he's bipolar or bisexual.... stupidity and arrogance has no place on a race track.

I pray for his complete and speedy recovery as well as comfort and peace to his family.
