It's nice to know that those of us out here that can drive the balls of a race car will never get the chance because of guys with a name. This guy had the world by the balls and gave it all away. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had a famous crew chief or a billionare home improvement store chain owner for a father? Granted Shane could drive, but Paul? I beat him up and down his dad's race track and I'm here writing in a forum. It's as bad as washed up people like Derricke Cope getting rides. There's good people, damn good race car drivers and teams like Bace Motorsports who aren't in the sport like they should be. It's a shame, soon enough it will be like CART. I can't wait until the "Car of Tomorrow" shows up, so they can totally ruin NASCAR.

No "dude" its not the case that if one could drive, one would be at the show. Shane got where he WAS because of his ability AND because of his name. The note from Kelly/Rem was merely saying that given the same chance, they wouldn't be screwing it up with drugs.

Further, I am an old racer who started when you could race on your own money...but, nowadays, you can't go the big show on your own money...unless you have lots of it (ie Menard/Hmeil, etc.)

Lastly, I do feel sorry for your friend Shane. The boy needs HELP; but the only one that can help Shane is Shane and it appears he doesn't want to help.....that's the shame of the Shane situation.

NASCAR only tests when there is probable cause. In 2005 NASCAR conducted about 45 random drug tests, which the drivers, et al must submit to if requested.

I wonder why Nascar has to be so secretive about this stuff? What are these secret banned substances? It kind of makes a difference on whether to feel sorry for the guy or not. Was he taking Nyquil or hair gel or shooting heroin? This secrecy makes NASCAR look very bad; like big brother.

I agree, it should make a difference what the substance is. If he was just drinking Nyquil, it shouldn't be the same as snorting coke or smoking crack. i liked to watch Shane race, and I miss him on race day. With the attitude that some of the drivers have toward their fellow competitors, the fans, and the Nascar officials, I think they're picking on the wrong person. If the "three strikes" principle is going to be applied to Shane Hmiel for a substance that they don't want to tell the fans about, it should also apply to people like Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, and that crowd for their lousy attitudes and the fights they've gotten into. You people who think Shane got special treatment because of who he is haven't been paying attention to the ones who have TRULY benefitted from receiving special treatment.

Why don't you all stop being cry babies and look at the facts. The little rich kid is a drug user he does not belong on the track. I don't care who his dad is or where he came from. Any good race fan would or should feel the same way, if you think he is ok to race you only tune in for the crashes and you are not a race fan. Suck it up.

I'm 43 years old and still dream of being a NASCAR driver,oh and a rock star...but I'm a husband and a dad of three great kids.I gave up my party days and became an adult...I wanted this life bad so it was easy for me...I just cant understand Shanes way of thinking...There had to be times when he was straight and was clear headed...whatever the drug I would have stopped and never looked back...I dont mean to judge but its just so sad....I wish him the best...

I work in a laboratory that performs drug testing. I can assure you that Nyquil is not what popped on his test. Standard drug screens don't test for over the counter meds that way. I seem to recall that when Jr got burned he had to stop his pain meds 3 days in advance to be cleared to race. Most drugs take 2-3 days to clear your system. THC can take 2 weeks. I hate it for him. I'm sure his family has/is trying to help him. It's hard to believe that some drugs are stronger than goals and ambitions.

Unless it is absolutely certain that he used before or during work he should be able to appeal the lifetime suspension. It is a travesty that a sport built upon the distribution of illegal substances can ban all use of illegal substance by it's athletes. If suspension were enforced in all cases of substance abuse NASCAR would have ejected many of it's popular drivers. JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED

It makes me sick how Nascar has come today.....yeah everyone knows right from wrong...But I can't sit here and accept a lifetime ban for Shane Hmiel.......I mean you got guys like Knaus out here cheating and all he gets is thrown out of the mix for a few races...big whoop..this is what like the fourth time now?....I just don't understand.......I think Shane needs help but has to want it...I don't think he deserved a lifetime ban from NASCAR...and I think it was pretty harsh...I've been following nascar for about 11 years now..........and I've never ever...heard of a punishment this hard...I guess it goes back to the saying........"What's good for some isn't good for others".....I think Nascar should of thought this over further...obviousilly something is going on with Hmiel that not many know about...But I don't think they should of just thrown him out...Shane's one of the best drivers..and he has great potential....I hate to see Nascar just throw him out...It makes me not even wanna watch racing anymore....I mean if this was someone else it wouldn't of ended like this....so let me get this straight NASCAR.....it's ok to cheat you'll just get thrown out a few races...but if you go and smoke a fatty kiss your career byebye?....what a way to show the boys how it's done...But I think you need to re-check the whole Knaus thing...because it seems only Knaus himself..got the point of that...I'm sure he's sitting at home notebook and pen in hand finding way to "Legally cheat" as he calls it..........I'm ashamed..........I thought Nascar was better then this.........I guess not...

This is why NASCAR has becomse my primary sport. It is a shame this has to happen to anyone. However I am sick of having to put up with primadona's in sports. Too good to listen to the coaches, so the coach gets fired. Drugs, violence, Punch the fans, spouse abuse, murder, lease of all, too good to sign an autagraph.
