Why do Cup teams make one-race driver switch?

SONOMA, Calif. Race fans see them every year, road-course "ringers" who show up to take the place of fulltime NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers whenever the series competes at Infineon and Watkins Glen.

It's the smartest thing they can do to get the points up. Some drivers can't do road races well so I would think they would be relieved in a way or maybe not.
