Robby Gordon and his team members will long remember their stunning performace at the 2009 Dakar Rally in South America....

After fourteen days of tight racing through difficult special stages, Americans Mark Miller (VW Touareg) and NASCAR’s own Robby Gordon (General Motors Hummer) will stand on the victory podium Sunday in Buenos Aires Argentina to receive their 2nd and 3rd place overall trophies after the world's most grueling race.

Giniel DeVilliers of South Africa (VW) won today’s 14th Stage, and claimed the overall victory with a time of 48 hours 10 minutes and 57 seconds.

"It’s just incredible. I never felt this way... I was so nervous in the last kilometers. I kept looking at how many kilometers we still had to go. But I must say this is an incredible feeling. I am so thrilled for the whole team, for Volkswagen that supported us for five years before we could get to this victory." said DeVilliers at the finish.

For Mark Miller, this was a huge accomplishment. He praised his fellow American Gordon for a job well done, and congratulated his fellow teammate DeVilliers: "The team won and that was our goal. It’s really awesome. Finishing second is great. It could have been Giniel (De Villiers) or me; that was the race. I am still young and I will have plenty more opportunities to win this rally."

Though he finished only 1 hour and 46 minutes behind Miller after 48 hours of racing, Gordon was the run-away winner in the “Open” Category, and over five hours ahead of 4th overall finisher, Ivar Erik Tollefsen of Norway driving a Nissan Navara.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for the Monster Energy Drink/Toyo Tire/General Motors Hummer! Coming in to this event, Team Dakar U.S.A. was hoping for a overall victory, or certainly a top five result overall, and here we will stand on the podium third overall and first in class!” said Gordon enthusiastically.

Due to terrorist threats last year, which caused promoters to cancel the event on the eve of its start, this year’s Dakar Rally changed venues and brought the race to South America. The route began and ended in Buenos Aires, with a three day visit to Chile. For Dakar “veterans”, it was all new territory, and played a major role in leveling out the entire field of drivers who are more comfortable with their familiar African terrain.
