Chasers closing gap on 4-time champ Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson is back in a familiar place, atop the points lead, headed toward what appears to be the inevitable: a fifth straight Sprint Cup championship.

lol what is this 'spark of hope' nonsense? So far, there's every reason to believe he's just as strong as ever. The only thing different is that team has an idea of how dominant they are and how small a risk it is to take chances.
You can hear it in the radio chatter: "Well whadda you think, bud? 2 tires or 4?"
Translation: "It's not gonna matter much, but we have an opportunity to make things more interesting."
History shows that the best opportunity (and usually the only chance in hell) to make up ground is to be the class of the field on a day when the 48 struggles. Unfortunately, the chase is where he shines too often. Teams have to try to top-5 EVERY week and hope that's enough. Over the years, the avg for the 48 team has been:
Anyone care to see if anyone's averaging better than 7.75 right now?

This article makes little sense. Jimmie took the lead after Kansas and increased his lead over everyone except Tony Stewart (who's still over a hundred points behind) and Clint Bowyer (who's pretty much out of it) after Fontana. That's a strange way of closing the gap. I hate to tell this writer, but only 3 guys within a hundred points, after 4 races, is a sign that it's business as usual. Jimmie is still very much in their minds too. All you have to do is hear and interview with the chasers to know that. They all wouldn't mention him at every opportunity if he wasn't.
It's racing, so anything can happen, but there's nothing different going on so far this year. People wanting it to be, doesn't make it so. If something happens and that gap starts closing, than we can talk. Until that time though, the gap is a wide as ever. Because the last time I checked, you don't beat someone by losing points to him week after week and that's exactly what has been happening. If the gap keeps closing like that, Jimmie won't even have to show up at Homestead.
