There are 17 comments on the BleacherReport story from Oct 5, 2010, titled NASCAR: The Rise, Fall, and the Chase that Caused the Decline. In it, BleacherReport reports that:

Up until the late 1970's, NASCAR was a southern boys game. Then a large snow front moved through the eastern seaboard of the United States leaving tens of thousands of potential fans to watch the first Daytona 500 to be broadcast from green to checkers.

Interesting that 87% of the vote wants to dump the Chase.

It's not just the Chase that's the problem, but the COT, boring tracks, corporate licking drivers (even our Tony has gotten boring), Nascar welfare system with the Top 35/wave arounds/Lucky Dog, points racing drivers, no brand loyalty with the cars and other things have ruined the sport. Add to that, the JJ drive for five, and you've got fans leaving. It's not the economy anymore, it's a whole lot more.

A$$CAR is a joke anymore. More round and round and round parades in those ridiculous boxes they call COTs!

I wasn't a Nascar fan yet in the "good ol' days" - so how did they win Championships before the Chase?

I do agree it's time for Nascar to realize they can't blame just the economy for empty seats and low ratings anymore. It seems to me, that while there are a lot of factors they can't control during a race, Nascar still tries to manipulate the outcome.

Personally, giving up a w/e to travel hundreds of miles, to watch Jimmie Johnson win again isn't any fun. From fan reaction at drivers intro and those few and far between times bad luck finds Johnson, I'm not alone.

No you are not alone.I agree with all you have said. There are not enough Jimmie fans to fill the stands...despite what some goobers think. Jimmie's sales are not going to support anyone either. And honestly the Frances can hand him championships till the world ends and people will not view him as champ..chimp maybe champ no...JMO

The only way to keep Jimmie and Chad from continuing to walk away with the championship is to change the point system back to the previous system. They spend half the first 26 races preparing for the last ten. That's why they're damn good at coming from behind in the chase to win the championship. Since NASCAR put the testing band on this concept of testing new things under race conditions plays right into their hands. Jimmie is a great drive but Chad is an even better crew chief. Chad is one smart man and coolest head in the pits when it comes down to running in the crisis mode. They're pretty much like Smoke and Zippy were in their prime. Since they separated it's been a world of difference. Both have had a little success but nothing like the magic they made together.

I'm not sure of the specific details, but I thought not too many seasons ago that Johnson won, a key race with Darian Grubb subbing as his crew chief while Chad was sitting out a penalty because of his "magic".

I don't want to start an argument - just thought that was a good point to make.

SHR is only in their 2nd year, and both teams have done quite well I think.

well, in my expert opinion as a long time fan of the GREATEST race car driver ever born, aka;
Tony Stewart,
I will say that what happened to the sport was that first they offended their FANS in an attempt to lure metro sexual fans to the sport... they took races from tracks in the east and gave them to tracks in the west that are BORING..
they then started to make villains of the guys who raced as hard as Sr and Rusty.. and FINED them...
the media that is part and parcel of NASCAR does not evaluate WHY a guy wins too much,, aka Jimmie Johnson, who won too many races on qualifying day, by getting the firt pit stall that gave him total domination of each race when he felt like using that strategy.. an example of recent is when he miraculously got the PERFECT pit stall this past race in Kansas, even though he qualified 21st.. the stall that he somehow got would have gone MUCH earlier usually... reporters... report please... this is ruining the sport... no one wants Jimboob Johnson to peel off pit road to gain spots he can not get by racing, like the demon Kyle Busch can and does....
the COT did not allow anyone behind the leader to even race for 4 years... that destroyed the sport... they finally let them race now and they do let them race.... they just need to oversee the pit stall selection because for Jimboob Johnson's evil scientist Chad to be able to miraculously get a good pit stall when his rocketship driving chimp does not qualify well,,, that is called CHEATING!
If they want to stop any car from having this advantage,, all they have to do, which they SHOULD do is take the first set of pit stalls back to the track from the chasers... do not let them pick from that set.. make them have to deal with pit road speed limits when coming off pit road like everyone else... give the first section back to the track to the nonchasers....
also,, have go or go homers qualify first,,, to ensure that rain does not send any home.. then back to back from points leader to 35th... track positions change and favor some spots and any chaser should not have a hgue advantage over any other car on the track...
other series of racing handicap the best cars .. NASCAR needs to at least take this HUGE advantage away from a single car that can lay down the fastest qualifying lap, since qualifying is not racing...
prior to this year, for the past 4 years of the chase all racing was on qualifying day, you might as well not watch any more, you might as well save the bucks and time... you might as well go home.
and as for Dega... just because Jimboob is afraid of that place does not mean that the rest of the drivers, actual RACERS, should give us a parade... make Jimboob the chicken chimp race at dega...and lose points as he SHOULD...

actually... Tony and Zippy did not match up that well in car prep and Tony would check out and wreck if his car was bad... Tony was never there,, just to drive ,,but the deal was that previous to the COT, a guy could RACE through traffic and get back to the lead and that was what Tony was best at...what the deal is now with Tony is that he is now aware how much wrecked cars cost and that it puts the team in a hole if he wrecks them.. so he settles for whatever position he can muster.. nothing against him, but he does not bonzai drive anymore dues to economics...
but... I think all the drivers say "Johnson is superman" because they do not want to hurt the sport... they need to say he is the best because they cannot figure out how it is that in the long run at the end the 48 car is the only one that can go forward...NASCAR seriously needs to tell the 48 team that they are going to DISSECT that car every single race from here on out... they are so upset about 1/64th of an inch on the 33 car.. what the heck is the 48 car doing??? they ARE cheating.. everyone knows it and everyone is sick and tired of it... I am sure that most fans go to the track praying to see Jimboob WRECK at his own hands, which happens whenever Chad cannot perform magic for him.
seriously.. Richomnd wants to sell us tickets at half price for next years spring race... but if I see Jimboob win another race in person.... I do not know what I am going to do... how many other fans feel this way??? I would say MOST...NASCAR should figure it out and dissect that car every single week or people like little old me are not going to buy tickets to anymore races.. I would rather see CONWAY win in ROBBIE'S CAR..... I would rather see the EXTENDZ girls in victory lane than see Jimboob miraculously be able to pass in the last laps of any more races....
but,, that is why I still go to Daytona.. because Jimboob admits he SUCKS... and is only LUCKY to get a push at Daytona... I remember how many times that guy lost the draft and needed a teamate to come and help him... oh dear... better call a caution the others refuse to drop back to help the faux champ... if only NASCAR would realize that by helping HMS out like they do,, they are slitting the throat of their own sport..
too bad the OWNERS are not even race fans!!!!!they would know what they are doing!!! FIRE MIKE HELTON AND ROBIN PEMBERTON!!!!! they are like POLITICIANS!!!! they have sold the sport out to HMS!!!

The opinions expressed below are strictly my own - and you are free to use that disclaimer too.....

ok - you've made some valid points - I think most fans would like to see the playing field leveled and let the best man win - but I enjoy seeing JJ beat himself by Chad miscalculating fuel, or dropping a cylinder, etc.

I would definitely disagree and think that you are positively wrong that most fans go to the track praying to see him wreck. Nobody hates to see him win more than me, but I certainly do not wish him harm. You do realize that despite all the safety features in the car and at the track, serious injury can still happen. Most fans would not want that for any driver, crew member or spectator.

Your conspiracy theory is interesting .... but I think you're offbase there too.

I'm not a JJ fan, but I certainly don't want to see any driver get hurt. Maybe a little tap here and there, just enough for someone else to win the race. Everytime I see them kiss their wife or girlfriend before they get in their cars, I pray that they have a safe race. I know a lot of Kyle haters rejoice when he hits the wall.

I agree about the anti-Kyle crowd, but I still would like to believe that they're just hoping the car is damaged enough for a DNF and really don't want to see him injured.
