Tony needs to get rid of Addington who is an old school chief who tinkers with setups. Bring Darian back, apologize for firing him and pay him double. He is an engineer who can figure out what to do instead of guessing. Kurt Bush would cuss out Addington every week because he could not set up his car either.
I am a die hard fan who wants to see Tony win a few more championships but until he gets a good chief that looks unlikely. NASCAR does not need another washed up champ like Bill Elliott and LaBonte...... Just saying.

I agree with you. I think Tony made a big mistake getting rid of his old crew chief. Things seemed to go downhill after he got rid of Darian.

I'm not a big Tony fan, but he's a legendary driver. He will be fine. He still has that fire in him. I agree, he just needs a crew chief that'll light a match underneath him. He beats up in the summer, so I think he will be fine. But long term, he needs a new crew chief.

Do you really think Darian would come back to crew
chief for Tony?? I don't think so I think he is much better off working
for Gibbs racing. He is to smart to make that change...

I agree with the general consensus here. In fact it seems almost everyone, except Tony, does. He so easily admits his on track mistakes, but for whatever reason he can't fess up to his crew chief debacle.

I also agree I don't think Darian would give Tony another chance to embarrass him and kick him to the curb. Darian landed on his feet and hasn't looked back. He had a better season than Tony in 2012 and this year goes w/o saying.

Tony's season usually picks up at the July Daytona race, but he's never had to dig himself this far out of the hole before. Without an amazing turn around, I don't see Tony making the Chase this year.

If you listen to Smoke radio conversation . His biggest problem is he is afraid of wrecking. I do not know if he is not sure of S A adjustments Or does not trust the tires. But it seems to be the same complaint every week . " I am afraid a tire is going to blow "

That is an excellent question, and it's never really been answered that I can recall. SHR's first season was 2009 and he had hired Darian Grubb from HMS. Turned out to be a smart move - Tony made the Chase in 2009, 2010 and as owner/driver won the Championship in 2011.

With no wins yet, Tony was interviewed in Aug 2011 about the Chase. He said his team didn't a spot in the Chase. Well, not only did the 14 team make the Chase, but went on to make history by winning 5 of the 10 Chase races and the Championship!

As I understand it, after winning the first two races of the Chase and well on their way to the Championship, Tony let Darian know Charlotte w/e in Oct that he would not be returning to SHR in 2012. Darian still led the team to 3 more wins and the Championship! Because Tony and Carl Edwards were tied in points after Homestead, it was that win that captured the championship.

The next day Tony's decision to fire Darian became public. Speculation was he made a deal with JGR - Darian for Greg Zipadelli, but not as crew chief apparently. For some unknown reason, he had hired Steve Addington as his crew chief. People make excuses they have to learn to work together, they have to learn the Gen 6 car, blah, blah, blah. Darian started at JGR at the same time and hes never made excuses. Time has ran out for Addington its time for some decent qualifying positions, top 5 finishes, and seeing Tony back in VL!

With his struggles this year, I can easily see Tony Stewart having a mental break down on the track and get jealous of Matt Kenseth's success. I mean, a real driver has taken over Tony's old ride and Tony could easily wish he was still there.

Take Kasey Kahne Off the Track and Tony would NOT have been crashed out at Daytona, nor at the next one Kasey caused a crash, nor at the 3rd one Kasey Caused A WRECK!!!!! the 5 is STILL the ticking time bomb on the track!!!
Tony IS going to make the chase... you just wait and see.. He has the hardship of worrying about Miss Danica and getting her cars repaired each week,, so, he chooses to make sure HIS cars are scratchless, unless of course Kasey Kahne has WRECKED HIM AGAIN!!!
Ryan is far more competitive than he was last year... Tony is in the wrong place at the wrong time when Kasey Kahne needs to cut in front of someone else, causing a wreck that has collected Tony on 3 different occasions this season...Have no fear.... Tony will be fine...he WILL be in the chase and more importantly than that,,, there are so many guns that can race the gen 6 that this is going to be the BEST chase ever...Toyota has finally gotten all the bugs out of their engines and fuel uptake and all that... Kyle, Matt or Denny might just BE the champ... and hopefully miracle fuel strategy will not win any races this year

Hindsight is 20-20 and we all live with a few regrets, but I totally disagree with you.

Matt is a former champion and excellent driver. He deserves the year he is enjoying.

Tony is a 3-time former champion, with a list of successes as long as your arm. I can't tell by your inference of "a real driver" if you're speaking of Tony or Logano, but Tony is enjoying a racing career, both as driver and owner, most drivers only dream of.

Tony is having an exceptionally bad year, but to suggest he is on the verge of a meltdown, mentally or even financially, is almost comical. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This describes the caliber of driver Tony Stewart really is.

all the speculation about Darian is guessing...
this is what I think... when Tony was given the opportunity by Rick Hendrick to be given half of Haas, after being told by JGR that NO he could not own any part of their organization, Not LETTING Zippy GO, Darian was put in place so that things would go smoothly between the HAAS and HMS organizations... I almost think that a deal was then made when Tony had waited the allotted time in order to get his brother Zippy back working with him.. who knows if JGR did not say "yeah, you can have Zippy now,, but we want Darian"... and of course... the connection between HMS and TOYOTA does not exist... so... is there an advantage anymore to having a guy who has learned how to win in so many ways other than having the best car??? Tony did not like winning that way.. he is old school as much as Addington is... who knows though...It seems that Addington is with Tony preparing even his dirt cars... so,, who knows if my feelings about Tony being fed up to his neck with the traveling circus of NASCAR that he is planning an exit from the 14???? we will have to see... all I know is that they honestly should cut the field down,,, do not LET guys in both NASCAR series race nationwide as well as cup so those other spots can be taken up by those who try to exist in the cup series with not enough funds to be competitive... get the field down to 35 cars so Kasey Kahne has less cars to wreck taking out his fellow competitors... but,, as usual that 5 car is a landmine for HMS... that is fact.. no matter who drove it,, from Terry Labonte, to Mark Martin, to Casey Meirs, to Brian Vickers and now Kasey,, it is a BOMB waiting to be deployed to take out HMS competition... I swear it... make it so that owners like Rick who already have 4 cars on the track cannot expand their garage with extra cars.... cut it down to truly 4 cars per owner... PERIOD... 35 cars on tracks like Bristol, Richmond, Martinsville etc will make that racing SOO MUCH BETTER!!!! sponsorship no longer exists for 43 cars.. the only reason the field was expanded to 43 was because there were sponsors... let the others race in nationwide.. which many times is better racing anyhow.

If you're right and Tony wants to exit Nascar, he's sure got the right crew chief putting the season together to make that happen.

How sad! Is this the way you think Tony wants his Nascar career remembered? Don't you think he wants to go out on top?

I prefer to think Tony's just having a really bad year and will shake up the garage soon to turn things around and drive like the champion he is. I just hope it's in time to salvage a part of this season.

Catrod...you're spot on

Tony is in it for life...he'll eventually be a Michael waltrip style full time owner and race a few times a year....he has not lost his spark

Only question is how Ryan fits into the lineup post harvick move...sponsor $$ needed

It concerned me some that Ryan's contract was only extended a year.....BUT......I think SHR is going to 4 cars in 2014. That seems a little risky, especially considering they are struggling with 3 teams this season.

Jayski reports that SHR has applied for the #4. There are rumors KH might drive #8, or he could even take the #29 with him. I've read that KH is bringing Bud and Jimmy John's with him.

Considering Ryan is SHR's top dog this year, I hope his contract is renewed. I've heard the 14 car is having sponsorship issues too, and that should be a big deal for somebody at SHR (besides Tony) to work on.

I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing Tony, and FYI My arm is not long enough for his success. Logano has gotten better the last few years. What makes me think that Stewart will have a mental meltdown is just the way he acts when things don't go his way on the track. Kenseth is a true professional...when the race is over, he leaves it all on the track.

Does McClure still have 4?
They were my favorite, but the times passed them many years ago...
