This was a hot topic the day after the Chase, and now it is again since Darian got to VL before Tony.

Although I still think Tony is second to none in the driver category, his decision regarding Darian certainly had me wondering if he knew what he was doing on the owner side of the coin. I thought it might come back and bite him in the butt.

It would definitely be a class act if Tony were to congratulate Denny and Darian, but I haven't heard either way on that.

Now that Darian has put the the 11 car in VL, the pressure for any thoughts of showing Tony what he lost is off and he can now just concentrate on winning back to back championships with two drivers. I'm guessing that probably hasn't been done before since most owners don't fire a championship crew chief.

Tony did send Darian a text message to congratulate him after winning last week right after the race. I do think it was time to make a change. Their chemistry was off all year and I don't think anything was going to fix it. I feel they both handled it as well as they could and it will end up being a good move for both of them.

I can not help but think darian being told he was not going to be with SHR after the season was a wake up call for Darian. It left him with something to prove and he proved it. Probably the best motivation for him to show case his talents and bring out his inner crew chief. Getting rid of the Dead weight was a factor too.I do believe this was a learning experience for both tony and darian. I do think he is going to be a great crew chief for Denny. and I do wish them the best...Jury is still out on Addington in my opinion. But Zippy I think will be the force that keeps it together. Tony respects Zippy and will listen to Zippy. Zippy can call tony out better than anyone else and get the necessary results.

In other words the dead weight would have been gone long before it was had Zippy been there. Zippy is always brutally honest with Tony.

I hope you're right! Tony needs someone that can talk where the rubber meets the road to him, but it's a lot easier to tell it like it is to a peer than your boss.

Exactly almost anyone that has worked in this type of environment will tell you .It is a cut throat world out there. I have worked with a person for yrs . And when they move up into a to the position of boss. It is like they have a Jekyll & Hyde personality. I still and will always believe you do not know a person until U have dealt with them on a daily basis.People R not always the people we want to believe they R.(9 times out of 10 times they turn out to be completely the opposite.) As I said yesterday, he's crazy like a Fox. Congrats to Smoke on a great win at Vegas. Great restarts! Loved hearing Darrel getting all excited over Johnson coming for the lead only to have the air let out of the Hendrick loving gas bag at the end.

I think darian wanted to call Tony out but did not feel confident he could do it and retain his job. He saw what happened to Hutchens... Am thinking Hutchens had enough and called tony out and lost his job for it. and then when he was told he was gone at end of the season he found his balls and decided to go for it. I truly believe that had tony not done that (told darian he was gone)that they would have continued with the same ol' same ol' and Tony would not have gotten the championship.
And honestly I think it was the best for both. The only part that bothers me is that should have been a celebrated championship by both and it was strained at best. Remember after Homestead it was like Darian was not sure what he should do... Just the look on his face... kind of sad.

We're in total agreement here. I don't think Tony lets any SHR employee forget who's in charge, so during the Chase Darian knew he had nothing to lose and needed to make himself marketable. And he sure did that in style.

A picture that stands out in my mind was in VL at Homestead when Tony was holding Darian's son and he was wearing a little 14 cap.

But before the went to VL he was behind the pit box with his wife and child looking kind of bewildered. Like he was not sure if it would be right to go out and celebrate with the guys.( when it should have been a no brainer). and in VL he sort of stood off to the side with his family(like should I be here or not?)and kind of taking his que's from Tony. As to whether he should be there at all. To me it was just very awkward and sad.(and it should not have been,) His first should have played out better... Hopefully the next one will be more joyous and he can feel more a part of it.And I think Darian will get more... I felt the same thing at the banquet as well... that week must have been really awkward.

Darion & his family huddle together will always be burned in peoples mind .Same thing with the speech he gave at the Banquet. And will always be a Black Cloud as far as Tony winning his 3rd CS.Some memory's stay with U. I can tell U what I was doing when Martin Luther King Jr & Senator Kennedy was shot.Tim Richmond giving the command Gentle Men Start your engine from his Hospital bed where he laid dying. The day it was announced TR had died . The look on Doug Yates face and the way his voice cracked . When he informed the racing world that Davey Allison died from his injuries. Will people ever forget watching Sr car hit the wall or the announcement Sr was dead .What were U doing on Sept 11 2001 when the when the country was under attack? people may not believe it NOW . But some memory's stay with U for ever. J/S

Darian definitely is a class act and to be picked up by JGR shows how good a crew chief he is. Not a great finish for Hamlin yesterday, but I would expect that they are going to do real well this year.
