How can it be a driver is punished before he leaves the track sometimes but a crew member is punished days later. Drivers can wreck other drivers and get held in the pits or fined on the spot but this is major and calls for more punishment. Inconsistent.

Bev. the reason in this incident is that, when was the last time you heard of a crew person doing this type of thing? I would think that NASCAR did the RIGHT thing by suspending this man for the rest of the race, anything else would be ADDITIONAL punishment and would be added on to the primary punishment which was done at the track and directly after the incident, same as in your driver case example.
