Only once since the Chase began in 2004 has a driver had a bad opening at New Hampshire and still won the title. That was Johnson, who finished 39th in 2006 but still won the first of his three titles. Other than that, every other Chase winner has finished sixth or better at Loudon.

If that theory held true again this year, then the 12-driver field has been reduced to Martin, Montoya, Johnson, Hamlin and Kurt Busch.

This is what always happens in the Chase - two-thirds of the field is eliminated from title contention in the first race. It's between the top four at most now - chances are we will never see the Chase where the drivers in the bottom four with three races left overpower the rest of the Chase field - and this is what the Chase needs to become legitimate.

before the chase:
after half a season, one driver has a 300 point lead and 42 drivers race for wins which is fun, but the championship is all over.

after the chase:
you have to get in. then you need to beat off the others going down to the final race every year and even then have to finish top 5 to win it.

i think it is pretty uch legitimate. actually its crapp, but it is exciting i suppose. the old system was fine. champ is best car from race 1 to 36. not 10th best 1 to 26, then best 27 to 36.

let them run 26 races, then rank top 10. then we can eliminate the worst finisher in each race until you have 2 guys battle it out. or, have simon cowell vote someone out based upon them singing after each race.
