NASCAR going too far with penalties

There are 224 comments on the msn.foxsports.com story from Feb 22, 2008, titled NASCAR going too far with penalties. In it, msn.foxsports.com reports that:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was in the house for pole day at the newly renamed Auto Club Speedway of Southern California on Friday and met with the seven Golden State natives currently driving in the NASCAR ...

Gordon was docked 100 points for an unapproved front bumper cover on the No. 7 Dodge during the initial inspection for the Daytona 500. Gordon's crew chief Frank Kerr received an additional fine of $100,000, was suspended for six races and will remain under probation for the rest of the season. Until the appeal is heard, Kerr will be allowed to remain at the racetrack. However, the deduction on points stays.

"We're going to jail for a crime we didn't commit," Gordon said on Friday. "It's almost like putting yourself in the position where someone steals your car and robs a bank, and because it was your car, you're going to jail. I don't think this is a fair penalty, and obviously, we'll have to appeal it.

"My sponsors, Jim Beam, and everybody else are behind us as a race team. They feel that we have not done anything wrong, and they're confident thatNASCAR will make the right decision once they hear the whole appeal process

I don't believe Robby is being singled out, nor do I believe NASCAR has an ax to grind with him for his previous behavior. The circumstances around this incident are a result of RGM's decision to switch manufacturers, NASCAR's inability to promptly approve new parts for Dodge's model change, and the supplier for not at least labeling the packaging denoting it as an unapproved part (which begs the question ... why send an unapproved part ... and why install an unapproved part?). As much as I'd love to find more fault with Robby, I feel for the guy! I know he will appeal the penalty, and I am sure that there will be some concession made then, but ignorance of the regulations is no defense, his own team did the purchasing AND the installation! While I think there was no intent to gain an advantage and NASCAR should revisit their decision, I also feel SOME penalty needs to be assessed - rules are rules!

Maybe 25 owners' points and $25K (I mean YEN!)would be pretty fair.

Go sign the petition on the Jim Beam website if you do not agree with the penality against RGM, especially the 100 owners' points and the huge fine.

JAPCAR just has to shit all over the single car teams, especially if you are JAPCAR-bad-ass---Robby Gordon!

We need more guys like him in JAPCAR and King Brian, Mafia Mike and Mr. Magoo want to run them out of JAPCAR!

OH HELLLL no. It was explained on NASCAR LIVE this morning why he got such a high penalty and it's simply because NASCAR gives these teams a rule book. That book has the APPROVED part numbers for ALL the part in it. All Frankie had to do was check the part number of that nose against what was in the rule book. Simple 2 minute process that would have saved them lots of money, points, and headaches. They didn't do it. It's as simple as that. NASCAR also said they were cracking down on COT violations. Did Rubby think he was special? Too bad. Next time, he'll make sure his parts are correct won't he.

Unfortunatly for RGM, the penalities are consistant with any other infraction on the COT car! If NASCAR changes these penalties Because Jim Beam, or the Rubber Moron fan club writes a bunch of letters, then we will all be able to finally PROVE favoritism! Remember "FREE THE EIGHT" program, that worked out real well too! "We don't look at intent" Darby said "We look at the rule book!" If anything The Moron needs to find a Mechanic that can read the rule book or at least double check it, against the parts! SORRY folks, RGM presented a car for inspection with illegal parts on it! Has anyone here heard of Responsability for ones own actions? Hendrick, Knauss, LeTart, Eury Jr. & DEI has! Look up thier penalities, and fines from last year, you'll find they are the same for the same infraction! Now prove intent! You can't? We can debate it all day, But we can't prove or disprove intent! And nither can NASCAR and they aren't going to try! NASCAR is not in the business of knowing intent, or who's lieing, and they don't care! They are in the Business of providing a race venue with a fair playing field for all! AND in this case. as well as the ones I mentioned above, they hit the nail on the head!

I agree 100%!! Also looks like some free advertisement for Jim Beam, they haven't have too much lately. "Rally for Robby" give me a break. JB is laughing all the way to the bank!! Anyhow, in a week, they'll be using those shirts for rags! LOL Whether the 7 team attempted to cheat or not, Robby should be a man, instead of a crybaby and take responsibility as the owner.

If your thinking that I don't like him....yep you're right!

Nascar has gone overboard, not just to far. For them to start this race in California on LAST year's points is just complete BS. I don't agree with the points system, for I believe they should qualify for each race just like NHRA.

This is a new year and they should use the most recent points THIS year to get in.

I guess this and many other reasons are why they are losing fans by the thousands.

Don.t they template the car when it goes thru pre-race inspection? If it passed the pre-race, then NASCAR has a beef if post-race an illegal front bumper cover is found. I don't know if an underfunded team such as Gordons has the wind tunnel time or the expertise to come up with an aero front bumper aid.

It was caught trying to pass pre race inspection before the cars even seen the track, Just like last year when NASCAR handed out the same fines to Knauss, LeTart, Eury Jr.!

To be fair to the reporter of this article, I'll give you the link to part 2! http://www.cupscene.com/nascar022308lead1.htm To be fair to all Moron fans, he has found some support, Unfortunately none of them are on the appeals board! I just read where he played the death card! Maybe if the Moron hadn't invested 4 million dollars in a car for Dakar and stayed home to make the deal with GEM, First he would have more cash, second he would've had more time to switch his cars over to Dodge! He's blaming everyone, Suck it up Robby, You and your guy's Blew this one! I've said all along, he is a driver, he just needs to make up his mind where! PS I find it quite "funny" they came up with the correct nose so fast?

Here are two of my favorite quotes (from Felix Sabates) regarding Robby Gordon...

"Robby Gordon has a tremendous amount of talent, but when he pulls the helmet over his head he knocks some sort of switch that makes him an idiot."

"I gave Robby [Gordon] an unlimited budget for Indy and he managed to exceed that."

Sounds like the same Robby Gordon driving the #7 car doesn't it?

Let me say ONE MORE TIME...... Robby and his team of morons(yes I lump Frankie Kerr in with them since he was dumb enough to leave MWR for a moron) had access to the NASCAR rule book. EVERY TEAM HAS ONE. All they had to do was match that nose part number they had gotten, with the approved pieces in the rule book, saw it didn't match, call Ray and tell him, and they would have gotten a new nose. Simple as that.

They did NOT take the two minutes to check the part numbers and were busted with unapproved parts. Simple as that. That was THEIR responsibility to check that. Show me another owner who's whining because another team sent them the wrong part. There isn't one. They take their lumps and move on. Robby is too much of a whiner to take responsibility.

As far as Helton "encouraging" Robby to appeal, he ALWAYS does that. It gets the drivers to SHUT UP and leave him alone.

Oh really. How many parts are in that book? Two minutes X each part is how long? And, you've got four days to do AT LEAST two vehicles.

Your math skills are even worse than your debating and communication skills. But, we're not surprised.

But, speaking of math, how long have M&B been separated now?

Beautiful!! The first quote pretty much sums up my opinion of RG. He's like Tony the tyrant, without the nascar trophys and any nascar championships. He may have a name elsewhere, but he is a chump in nascar until he accomplishes something other than creating the first "dual burnout" after someone else won a race.

Hey Get, if it saves me $100,000.... my ass or someone else's would take the time to make sure that nose was the correct one. Doesn't require any math, just a brain to check some numbers. If it takes YOU more than 2 minutes to check a nose part number, than you are stupid..... then again, we already know you're stupid, so it's no surprise you'd have a problem with that.

Besides, that just proved how little you know about NASCAR. About 95% of the parts for the cars are the same, only difference is a few stickers and different nose.

Yup, exactly. I don't know of any other driver who's been threatened to get kicked out of NASCAR simply due to his behavior. That's pretty sad. Too bad him & his team members can't read a book and check part numbers or they'd be doing just fine.
