There has been a lot of good debate lately about the Chase format and how it has affected the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. NASCAR's Chase for the Cup has now settled seven Championships. How would those seven have gone without the Chase format?

According to my friends over at Jayski.com only three Chase champions would also have won the traditional points. Tony Stewart in 2005, Jimmie Johnson in 2006 and again in 2009 would have won the title either way.

Without the Chase Jeff Gordon would have two more Championships (2004, 2007) for a total of six . Carl Edwards would have won the 2008 crown and Kevin Harvick would have scored the title this season.

My hat's off to Steve McCormick. He's has a much bigger audience than we do discussing Nascar making a mockery of the championship.

I'm glad somebody did the math - that really puts the number of championships JJ actually earned into perspective!

Ditto post #3 We could avoid all the falderal about record setting, history making.

when a guy is over 300 points back at the end of the first 26 races and is put 30 points ahead of the driver with the huge points lead at the start of the chase, somethings wrong that picture.

Let's face it, the Chase was invented in an attempt to get JR to a championship. NASCAR tried to cheat all season for him, but it became too obvious, when the fans started to scream that it was "fixed" then NASCAR came up with the Chase. They figured JR would be good enough to be in the top 10 with 10 to go, and if they leveled the playing field, they could do a bit of rule bending for him in those last 10 to get him there. Then, they had to make it the top 12, because JR wasn't good enough. This season, when JR got into the top 12 (briefly) all the talk was about how JR was in the Chase...and when he dropped out of the top 12, they started talking about increasing the Chase to include the top 15 drivers. Problem is, to guarantee JR a spot in the Chase, they need to include the top 35 cars in the Chase, because JR sucks that bad. All of NASCAR keeps dancing around and jumping through hoops, ruining the sport and mauling the rules, just to make JR into a legend, regardless of the fact that he is clearly not worthy of the hype. And they wonder why the fans are leaving in droves.

They need to scrap the Chase, go back to the old points system and give the Sprint cup trophies to those who rightfully earned them since the Chase started. They need to start supporting the truly talented racers and stop hyping the loser, JR. Get back to racing, instead of mauling the spirit of the game to create a legend where one does not exist.

Actually I think that was the point - to not points race for the 1st 26 but to go for wins for those bonus pts going into 27.
