I see what you're saying - sometimes a person's popularity lives on or even grows after their death. It also seems you try to remember the "good things" after they're gone.

There's no way to know for sure how Nascar stats would be different had he survived, but a few things I think impacted by his death are:

1) Jr had a following, but nothing like after his dad's death. Sympathy vote? I don't know, because his career has been somewhat disappointing.

2) Who knows when/if Harvick would have gotten his break?

3) Car and track safety has been a major focus of Nascar. Sadly, not so much with the tragic deaths of Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty within 2 months of each other in 2000.
