NASCAR drive Tony Stewart has an agenda: to destroy the Goodyear name. What other explanation is there after his latest tirade?

In the final practice for the 2009 Daytona 500, Stewart and teammate Ryan Newman crashed when Newman's right rear tire went flat. Stewart immediately blamed Goodyear, while a Goodyear spokesman said track debris was the cause.

Goodyear had problems at last year's Daytona 500, the first with all teams using the "Car of Tomorrow." At this point, it is undecided whether the company has completely solved the problem (in addition to Stewart's comments, Goodyear recalled a number of race tires from Daytona a few days ago).

That's not the point. And neither is Stewart's tendency to speak his mind. Some consider it whining. I often consider it refreshing.

But not when it comes to Goodyear. He goes out of his way to bad mouth the company whenever he experiences a problem -- and no one experiences as many problems with the tires as he does. Hmmmmm. Sounds kind of like the Andretti drivers at the Indianapolis 500, doesn't it? It's never their fault that the engine blows.

In addition, Stewart has won two Cup (Winston and Nextel) championships with Goodyear, the last in 2005. If Goodyear is still figuring out the Car of Tomorrow, so is Stewart.

His comments go beyond constructive criticism.'"(It's) a ridiculous situation with these tires," he said after the crash. "Apparently that is their marketing strategy: to get press," he said after a reporter mentioned the recall.

After a race last year, he was reported as saying Goodyear should be "embarrassed" about the tire it had brought to the race. "If they can't do better than that, pull out of the sport. I guarantee you that Hoosier or Firestone could do a better job than that...."

What a surprise that he would mention Hoosier. Prior to joining NASCAR's Winston Cup series, Stewart won the Triple Crown of USAC (United States Automobile Club) Racing on Hoosier tires, so he has a built-in bias favoring the brand.

NASCAR, like almost all of us, is being affected by the economy. Sponsors are looking closely at whether or not they are getting enough return on their investments, and some have pulled out.

Race teams, too, are feeling the pinch. And Stewart is fielding his own team for the first time. I get it -- he's under pressure to perform.

But Stewart's knock on Goodyear is mean-spirited and counter-productive. Anything that hurts NASCAR's image can affect its bottom line and, in turn, the profitability of its drivers and owners.

No supplier will bat 100%, and I would have to give Goodyear, which has been supplying NASCAR with tires for more than 50 years, the benefit of the doubt.

Goodyear signed an exclusive five-year contract with NASCAR's major circuit in 2007. What if Goodyear decides it is not getting a return on its investment, and decides to pull out after 2011? What then?

Hoosier tire will fail on the track. Then back to square one.
