Aug 5, 2010 Full story: The Birmingham News 26

It's time to stick a fork in Dale Earnhardt Jr. Because he's done. Again. Yes, it is true that there are still five races left to decide who is in and who is out of the Chase.

Thanks for speaking the truth, Mr. Demmons. I'm sure more sportswriters share your opinions, but don't voice them for fear of the backlash from Jr Nation.

Lance probably beats his head against the pit box each week. i bet Lance can't wait for the season to get over so he can get as far away from that deadbeat as he can

You just keep buying those t-shirts and die casts. You are the kind of person that The Junior wants to be his fan.

Dale Jr fans are fans because of the person not because he wins races. You haters will just have to get over it!

Being a fan of his because he wins races would be a bit of a stretch, wouldn't it?

Oh, get real people. Who the hell is going to give up something that is putting 30 or 40 million in their pocket every year whether they win or not. All this he should do this or that is just BS. Jr. is going to keep plugging way at trying to race as long as the cash keeps rolling in, that in a nut shell is the truth of the situation. As long as his name recognition holds up, he'll be around cashing the checks just like any one you would. Any of you that say you'd do any different if you were in the same place is a liar and the truth isn't in you.

There will come a time though, where the lack of winning will catch up to Junior. He's losing fans by the droves, so his MPD status is getting shaky, some of the real talent drivers are already threatening that title as well as the most t-shirt sales. After that fades, what will the sponsors find attractive in him? Sponsors want a winner to represent their company and product. If he continues with his "I don't care enough to try" attitude and adds the impression that he's not only a loser but also a quitter to his already tarnished image, the sponsors will move on to others who can endorse their product with a more positive image. Without wins and good sponsorships, he will fade and so will the big paychecks that are based of the fluff rather than any real substance.

I do believe that the stunning Nationwide victory at Daytona in the 3 car for jr was the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of NASCAR fans. A lot of my friends and some who are jr fans, ALL had the same conclusion that the race was nothing more than a staged event....a sad day for NASCAR. My question is why sacrifice the whole organization just to promote jr??? Hopefully the fan base will return now that jr is fading and the race coverage isn't "everything about jr".

On that questionable win, I think NASCAR immediately realized that they didn't fool anyone, everyone saw that it was staged. Notice how quickly they let the whole thing drop? They have really toned down the all-Junior-all-the-time yapfest since then, too. NASCAR knows they have made a mistake in pushing the false image of Jr as a champ in the making way past what the fans are willing to fantasize or support. NASCAR damaged their own credibility with that one and the damage may take a long time to repair.

You couldn't be more wrong. The majority of people, like myself, take pride in doing a good job, being better than average and expect themselves to exceed standards set for them. There are lazy people such as joonyer who couldn't care less about their accomplishments or self worth as long as they keep getting their check in the mail. Jooonyer is the equivalent of a deadbeat that fakes an injury and collects his monthly disability check while the truly disabled get up everyday, give 100%, and are a contributor and an asset to society. Joonyer nation is the equivalent of uncle sam doling out a bogus check to a deadbeat.

Hellllooo, re-read what you wtote. Essentially, we wrote the same thing. Jr. has talent as evidenced by his 18 wins in Cup and 2 Natinwide titles but he lacks the committment and dedication to win races now. Yeah, he's gotten lazy. Now he's riding the name for what it is worth and when people get tired of paying for the name he'll "retire". Hendrick isn't going to do anything with him until that time comes. Right now, Jr. is still putting the lion's share of the revenue in Hendrick's operation.
