I suspect that a comet impact was responsible for many of the phenomena at the close of the Permian. You may see an article that discusses the Permian extinctions from this, especially as interacting with termites, in . If you see anything that should be added to or subtracted from it, please let me know.
You may find interesting a hypothesis of my son that the volcanoes on Mars and the bulges associated with them were from the disruption at the antipodes of huge meteor impacts in and possibly an impact here on earth also in
