Bill Elliott cancels appearance at IWK 250
Awesome Bill not so Awesome
Riverside International Speedway
For immediate release
July 9, 2007 - Riverside International Speedway regrets to announce the cancellation of Bill Elliott’s appearance at this year’s heavily anticipated IWK 250 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) race, scheduled for Saturday, July 21 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.Riverside Speedway received in writing the cancellation notice from Mr. Elliott late Friday. In his statement he said,“There is no way I am going to Nova Scotia to race that weekend…I am too busy.”
Mr. Elliott’s last-minute cancellation notice comes after Riverside Speedway management secured the NASCAR Cup champion’s appearance on April 27, 2007 with an extra-cost no-cancellation guarantee. We paid an expensive premium to guarantee his participation in the race,” says Paul McLean, Riverside Speedway manager.“With the agreement in place, and with active cooperation from his management company, we felt comfortable promoting Mr. Elliott’s appearance in print, TV and radio advertisements.”
Riverside Speedway has been heavily advertising Mr. Elliott’s appearance since April. The race is a fundraiser for the IWK Children’s Hospital. Major sponsorships from DuPont Canada and Steve Lewis Auto Body have been secured for the marquee event. A large number of advance tickets have been sold to date.
Bill has always emphasized his enthusiasm for getting back to his roots by racing at local tracks to support the fans who’ve made him so popular,” says John Chisholm, owner of Riverside Speedway.“I’m bewildered and saddened by Bill’s change in commitment to his fans, some of whom are traveling great distances to see him here. We’ve been working hard to create an amazing event to benefit the IWK and he’s let us all down.” The IWK 250 will proceed despite Mr. Elliott’s decision to not participate.“We’re working feverishly to find a suitable replacement,” says McLean; however at press time we were unable to confirm please check our website for further details in the coming days.
We chose Bill Elliott and agreed to pay a premium for a no-cancellation agreement. We agreed in good faith, and proceeded to aggressively promote the race using Bill Elliott’s likeness with print, radio and TV ads. We designed a ticket and fashioned our pace truck around Bill Elliott’s appearance. We sold the race sponsorship and partnered with the IWK to put together an amazing event that would benefit the finest children’s hospital in Eastern Canada.
On Friday, we received notice in writing that Bill Elliott has backed out of his commitment. He stated that,“There is no way I am going to Nova Scotia to race that weekend. Now stop bugging me.” We have gone to great lengths to try and change his mind, showing him the promotion we have done and what his appearance has meant to the IWK. In all cases we were rudely told,“No, I am too busy.” This response is after he accepted our offer back in February. In Riverside Speedway’s opinion, Bill Elliott has let down his fans in Atlantic Canada. He has let down the sponsors of the race – Steve Lewis Auto Body and DuPont Canada. And, he has let down the IWK. The sick children who made special plans to attend the race to see their hero, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, will not get the chance now. Most of these children never get an opportunity to go to races, let alone meet Bill Elliott. The disappointment these children will feel is beyond belief.
The credibility of the track and promoters has been compromised by these uncontrollable circumstances. Elliott has proven to us that we don’t want this type of driver around here representing our facility, our sponsors or our race fans.

I just could hardly believe that Awsome Bill would do such a thing as stand up a children's hospital. If there was a better reason than "I'm too busy" he hasn't supplied it. He made a commitment to appear and really left people in the lurch.
NICE WORK BILL! Nothing AWSOME at all!

I hope this is not typical of Nascar drivers. If it is my days of going south for Nascar races is over. How can you sell a "no-cancellation agreement" and then back out. Must be the way its done in Dawsonville! Hopefully this will hit the Nascar main stream and Elliott will lose fan base because of it. I will admit I am not a fan of Elliotts, but still wanted to see him race. The few fans this old fart still has in Nova Scotia will be hiding for weeks. I will be raising my middle finger to him at Riverside on the 21st.

I feel the same way, shows he really doesnt care about these sick children, he would rather run for the Woodbrothers who are only using him to make the feild for his provisionals, he made this agreement before he ever did this deal with the Woodbrothers, he has no heart is all I can say, withought fans he is nothing, he should realise every penny he owns comes from the fans, and this is how he repays them, espically us Canadian fans, it doesn't make him look too good is all I can say

I say lets have Kenny Schrader come, he has more class and love for local racing, I'm sure he could put on a good show and make the sick childrem smile, I always respected and liked Schrader and since he doesn't have his 21 ride, this is the perfect oppertunity.

Bill Elliott's announcement is an absolute disgrace. Does he not understand the consequences of his foolish actions?
First of all, he will disappoint so many sick children who were looking forward to seeing him at Riverside. With the fragile state of health that many of these children are in, this was something that was going to bring some happiness to their lives.....even if it was only for one evening. Now, they must endure bitter disappointment after being told that Mr. Elliott is "too busy" for them.
Secondly, he has put John Chisholm, Paul McLean, and all the other good people involved with Riverside Speedway in a compromising position. I had the pleasure of attending the Maritime Pro Stock Tour Race in June of this year and I can tell you, that facility is world class. For anyone who has been there in the past, the upgrades and renovations are exceptional. It is a true sign that Mr. Chisholm is passionate about the sport of stock car racing, and is committed to preserving it and enhancing it in the Antigonish area so that future generations can get as much enjoyment out of it as we have. Furthermore, Mr. Chisholm attempting to secure such a high profile star to highlight this event at his facility, is proof of his respect for the great racing fans in the Maritimes. He went above and beyond to "reward" the fans for their support. In my mind, Mr. Elliott has given Mr. Chisholm a big slap in the face, and it is totally unfair.
Thirdly, in my opinion, he has tarnished the "NASCAR" name. Being a star for many years in the NASCAR Winston Cup and now Nextel Cup series, he informally represents NASCAR wherever he goes - whether he likes it or not. He would be considered an ambassador to the sport of NASCAR racing. It is no different than Wayne Gretzky representing the NHL. Even though I know NASCAR has nothing to do with this, I think it will tarnish their reputation. I hope word of this spreads to the higher ups at NASCAR. For the past number of years, their goal has been to take the popularity of NASCAR racing beyond the Southern States, and into the Northern U.S. and Canada. Having one of its legends do this is not helping to accomplish their goals. One only has to look at their purchase of the former CASCAR series to see that a presence in Canada is important to them. With the Nextel Cup Series being off that weekend, I think the folks at NASCAR should do everything they can to encourage one of their drivers to fill in.
Lastly, I feel sorry for the other drivers and their sponsors. The men and women who invest so much time, money, and energy into their sport. To our local boys from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, and to our great friends from the U.S. who travel here as part of the PASS tour. These people don't do this for a living, they do it because they love it. I'm sure they were all looking forward to testing their skills against a world class driver. Put yourself in their shoes, Mr. Elliott. Imagine if back in your day before the stardom and before the money if the likes of a Richard Petty or a David Pearson or a Bobby Allison was going to race at your local track? And the sponsors who were paying good money to be part of this event. The people who drive this sport - without them, there would be no racing. The hard working people who contribute their hard earned money to support racing. They were to benefit, as they should, from the exposure this event was going to provide their businesses. Mr. Elliott has slapped them in the face also.
So Mr. Elliott, I hope you're happy with what you've done. Hopefully, Mr. Chisholm and Mr. McLean are able to secure an adequate replacement. Someone who values integrity, committment, and someone who stands for everything you don't.
My wife and I will still be there on Saturday the 21st, supporting the IWK, supporting Riverside Speedway, and cheering on the real heros and superstars of the sport.

well lets face it the rule of thumb for any professional promoter to make signing of the deal a media event. Pretty simple to do You pay fly the man to nova scotia and pay him his fee for a speaking engagement. This serves two purposes A. Having a great promotional tool and B. Having the man in a position that he cannot deny he didnt make the deal or his rep will pay big time for backing out.
This is a lesson people at Riverside Speedway have learned the hard way and should really think about. And what exactly is Bill Elliot worth to Riverside Speedway? About 3000 advance tickets out of 10000 seats a couple of weeks before the event? Right now we are into a he says he says with one party making the claims ,Riverside Speedway, and the other party, Bill Elliot a semi retired NASCAR legendary champion that does not need anyone in Canada what so ever because he made his 75 million in prize money plus his sponsorship south of the boarder. Bill Elliot is in a Woods Brother car and that was very apparent when this deal came to light. So why the outrage or surprise if there are so many Bill Elliot Fans in Atlantic Canada? Apparently you didn't see the TV ads, don't follow local racing or were not inspired to come and sell out the race in the first three days which should have been a given.

Not defending Bill Elliots actions at all but there is a bit more then meets the eye I am sure especially when it if framed from one party jilted.

Why should they have had to make the signing a media event to "prove" that he made the agreement? What happened to having integrity and following through on your commitments!

I agree, if the man can't keep his word, we don't need a loser like him here in Nova Scotia, lets bring in someone who actually cares about what this race is about, supporting the IWK and those sick children. By the way for those of you who didn't know, the 21 is an off weekend for the Cup series so Bill had no excuse not to have been able to come. All he could say is I'm too busy, He also said stop bugging me, the answer is NO!! He sure doesnt care about all his Canadian fans who buy his merchandise and went to the races to see him race in the States over the years. All I can say is what goes around, comes around, he will get whats comming to him someday.

Cool, this will not be forgetten, Regan will gain a tremendous amount of respect and support for doing this from our fellow Canadians, he will be welcomed and it shows how good of a person he is and how big of a heart he has to do this for the sick children on such short notice. I believe he will have a fun time racing in Nova Scotia.
