Bob Jeffrey, longtime NASCAR spotter, currently serves in that role for Tony Stewart's No. 14 Cup Series team.

What other duties do you have with the No. 14 team aside from spotting?

"That's it. When my sweetheart is on the race track, I'm watching her."

Excuse me?

"The car."

OK, got it. They won't let you do anything else?

"They're afraid I'll tear up something. They won't let me do anything. Back in the day, I used to work on race cars. Worked for Ed Whitaker. Harry Gant was our driver. Dale Earnhardt would drive it every now and then."

Things seemed to go OK with them, and you still can't be trusted?"

"That was back then. I'm getting old and fat. It's been a long time since I bloodied a knuckle. I might get a paper cut, but that's it."

We're hearing a lot of talk about how important you spotters are this week. Does that puff you up a little bit?

"No, because I have a simple thing about spotting: Just tell 'em what you see, don't invent nothin' and everything will be fine."

Up there on the roof, do the spotters have assigned spots?

"We all have our places we like to go, and everybody knows it. But yes, most of the time we pick where we want to stand based on where we start the race, kinda like they pick pit stalls."

What happens if you get a long green-flag run and have to visit the boys room?

"That's never happened. If there's a red flag or something, then you can go."

Ever seen any violence up there?

"I've seen some pretty good arguments up there over the years, but no violence to speak of. Just some shouting. I'm kinda the calm guy up there."

Speaking of calm, how about your driver?

"He's pretty calm. The last two years, how's he been doing? I think he's getting wiser."

If you're riding in a car with somebody, ever get the urge to tell them what to do?

"You wanna call my wife? She'll tell you that. I'm bad. I try to tell her how to go, where to go, how to do it."

I guess around town it's more than just left-hand turns.

"Yeah, but we live in Indianapolis and we have (Interstate) 465 that goes 52 miles all the way around. It can be all left-hand turns."

You aren't buying all the hype about you guys being so important this week?

"No, your main job is safety first, and if you can help them be competitive, that's fine. A good day at the race track, at the end of the day they all get out of the car and they're walking and talking just like they were when they got in the car."

Ever get the urge to ask a driver, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"
"I say it all the time."
And you're still employed?
"Well, I don't say it. I wonder it."
When they say the spotters this week are really spotting for two cars, any chance you'll get two paychecks?
"We actually talked about that after practice today."
And the answer?
"No."

Dale Earnhardt has been gone for 10 years now. What do you see as Earnhardt's legacy to racing? He did a lot of things nobody will ever do again -- and he also got away with a lot of things nobody will ever do again. He was the best.
What does Dale Earnhardt Jr. need to do to win again? He might have to go to another team. Ever since he got out of the Budweiser car, things haven't been the same.
What do you think of NASCAR's most recent point changes? I like it. It's easier for fans.
What do you think of Daytona's repaving? I love it. It's probably going to make it faster.
Who eventually ends Jimmie Johnson's reign as NASCAR champion? Somebody will -- but I don't know who.
TV ratings are down. Why aren't you watching? I watch only because I have Sundays off. I think it's monotonous.
If you were a NASCAR driver, what song would be playing on your radio? Oh, I'd just be concentrating on what I was doing -- not playing a song.
If you had to pick a NASCAR driver to date your sister or your daughter, who would it be? Casey Kahne. The girls like his eyes and he seems like a pretty nice guy.
Which NASCAR driver would you warn your sister or daughter to avoid? At one time or another, they've all done something, and I would say she should be smart enough to pick up on it herself.
Do you plan to visit the beach while you're here? No, it's a little too cold for the beach.
QUESTIONS & ATTITUDE
Today's big questions ... and maybe a few actual answers
Is it too late to bring in Allen Iverson as grand marshal?
Probably too late, and that's too bad, because he would love the new schedule -- practice is optional. Or so it seems. Only 12 cars went out for each of Friday's two Daytona 500 practice sessions. Only four teams opted to go out for both. That leaves 23 teams that never left the garage.
Why?
Handling. Or, as Richard Petty says, hanlin' Before the repaving, it took a lot of work to get a car to handle well with all the turbulence of a big pack on rough asphalt. Now, the bumps and dips are gone, as are the big packs. Most or all will likely turn some laps today to try rooting out any gremlins. If not, it'll be the lamest Happy Hour this side of Provo.
Shouldn't we have received the "sellout" press release by now?
It's not a good business practice if the ticket window is still thrown open.
The cheapest seats for Sunday's race --$55 for a section of the backstretch -- are gone, but tickets starting at $70 are still available.
Why?
Best guess: Potential late buyers aren't fired up about the type of racing only Noah could truly love -- two by two by two by two ... And who knows, they might regret it, if you consider the possibility that 25 years from now we'll say, "Remember that crazy year when they raced in pairs? I MISS THAT!"
Did they break out the fancy puddin' at the Bistro yet?
Afraid not.
The dessert of choice for Speed Weeks has been something called, "Molten chocolate lava cake with vanilla bean ice cream and raspberry coulis."
The Boys from Macon want you to put coulis in layman's terms.
Squeezins.

NOTES

HOT RODS AND REELS:

NASCAR racing legend Donnie Allison and current NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer won the Darrell Gwynn Foundation Spectracide Hot Rods & Reels Charity Fishing Tournament on Lake Lloyd on Friday.

Allison's team caught largemouth bass that weighed a combined total of 18.15 pounds for the tourney championship. Wimmer caught the largest fish, a 6.39-pound bass.

The tournament benefited the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, which has a mission to provide awareness, prevention, support and, ultimately, a cure for paralysis. The foundation presented Kyle Darroch with a new custom-motorized wheelchair.

CHEESEHEADS AT THE 500:

Travis Kvapil, a devout Green Bay Packers fan, had a contest asking fans to submit photos showing off their Packers pride. Barbara Nixon of Lakeland sent a photo of her family dressed for church in their Packers best, including a Cheesehead. Nixon won four tickets to the Daytona 500 that were donated by Daytona International Speedway.

PLAYING IT SAFE:

Only 12 drivers took to the track for each of the two Daytona 500 practice sessions Friday afternoon, a sure sign that many teams had decided to play it safe and not take a chance of wrecking leading up to Sunday's race.

Mark Martin led the afternoon's daring dozen with a top speed of 196.803 mph. All four Hendrick Motorsports drivers participated. Jimmie Johnson was second at 196.794 mph, Jeff Gordon was ninth at 193.424 mph and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 10th at 193.266 mph.

The morning session was paced by Jeff Burton in the No. 31 Chevrolet at 196.648 mph. Burton also had the top 10 consecutive laps average speed of 194.307 mph.

ARMY STRONG:

An effort to get the Pentagon to quit spending money on NASCAR race team sponsorships failed in the House on Friday. By a vote of 281-148, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the effort by Minnesota Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum that would have ended the practice.

The U.S. Army is on the No. 39 Chevy driven by Ryan Newman and owned by Tony Stewart.

"Obviously we're pretty excited about that," Stewart said in reacting to the news. "Obviously this is a program that works for them or they wouldn't be a part of this sport. It's been a very successful tool for the U.S. Army, and hopefully we get to continue that program with them. Definitely from a car owner's side, that was good news (Friday). You're always worried when you don't know what can happen, so anything that's out of your control, you're always worried about."

SUPPORTING PARALYZED VETS:

Paralyzed Veterans of

America was announced as an official charity of Penske Racing for the 2011 Sprint Cup season. The PVA's Mission: ABLE Help Our Heroes campaign will be featured on the No. 22 Dodge driven by Kurt Busch and No. 2 Dodge of Brad Keselowski.

"We are honored to welcome Paralyzed Veterans of America to the Penske Racing family," team owner Roger Penske said. "They do outstanding work for our servicemen and women. We look forward to helping them increase their visibility within NASCAR."

Bill Lawson, PVA president, said: "Penske Racing's support will help us reach an even wider audience, enabling us to raise much-needed funds and awareness for our paralyzed veterans' greatest needs: care, benefits and jobs."
