You may have recently seen or heard Kyle Petty's monologue on how Danica Patrick is more marketing machine than racer.

I haven't seen women doing well on race tracks. Not in general, anyway. You can surely find an exception here and there, the few that do fairly well, but on average they seem to do below average. Let me illustrate.

Let's use the example of Danica Patrick ("DP," as I like to call her) when she was still in IndyCar. During the 2011 IndyCar season she ranked 10th. That's not too great, but is in the top half, although barely. She was, however, the best-performing female at the time in IndyCar and not the only female. We can't just look at that one driver's performance and treat it as representative of the general pace of female drivers.

The next ranked female was Simona de Silvestro, down in 20th. That's not so hot. There were only 22 drivers there for basically every race of the season. Right below her was the next female, Ana Beatriz, in 21st. If you average them up, they average 17th, and remembering that this is out of 22 drivers who were there for almost every race of the year. That average puts them near the bottom.

Crap. I should clarify that male drivers would average about the 50% mark. To explain, let's say we had a field of 22 cars, all driven by men. Their ranked positions would average 11th, which would be right at the center. It would be above 17th, however, by a good bit.
