Of course it adds excitement! It's good for ratings and television exposure. But I hate people that wish for drivers to crash. These guys are husbands, fathers, and sons. It's sad that wrecks are what brings viewership, but as long as they walk away alright.

Without crashes, NASCAR would go out of business.

A few years back I was at a local dirt track and a couple idiots in front of me were talking about a race they recently saw at another track. One of them was commenting on the lack of good racing and "no good crashes." I wanted to kick him in the back of the head. I've said that I'd like to be there when one of these crashes-are-awesome people have a car crash on the street or highway so I can get out of my car and excitedly cheer. "Woooooo, yeah! That was awesome!"

Sooner or later, someone is sure to come along and argue that crashes can happen in motorsports, that drivers are aware of this, and drivers accept this fact, so that makes it okay. The fact is that, while always possible, crashes still aren't supposed to happen. They aren't what happens when things go right, but rather when they go wrong. You're not supposed to actively want things to go wrong. When we get into our cars to drive to work, to the store, or wherever, we do so with the knowledge that a wreck is always possible, but that doesn't mean we should wish crashes on one another and doesn't make them less horrible. They're not supposed to happen on the way to the store, or on the way around a race track.

They're what the typical fan wants, though. They aren't so big into the whole driving part. They just want to see cars arbitrarily trading positions and crashing.
