Petty says Patrick 'isn't a race car driver'

Jun 28, 2013 Full story: SanLuisObispo.com 67

During a Thursday night appearance on SPEED's "Race Hub" program, the former driver and current TV analyst said Patrick is more of a marketing machine than a race car driver and doubts the 30-year-old will ever be one "because I think it's too late."

Wow! Maybe I'm crazy but, listening to Kyle is a vast improvement over Darrell Waltrip. Kyle may not have been the "greatest" driver, but he does stay closer to reality.
Danica winning a NASCAR Cup championship is not likely.
She is no question a good driver, the problem is the 20 or 30 great drivers she competes with.
the last 2 cautions Danica got the lucky dog , so I guess shes doing great ...

I agree with Kyle Petty, she is not A race car driver. nascar and Stewart only have her for the sponsorhip & some men like to gawk at her.

Wow 19 races and supposed to be a top 10 driver?

Look at Juan Pablo or Sam Hornish?

No such criticism during their first season.

Then there is Tony but he drove sprints, karts and midgets.

THE most diversified NASCAR driver in the field.

So I'll reserve judgment for 2 seasons.

So should everyone else especially Kyle Petty.

His face time in the press must be slipping.

Actually, no, Danica has NEVER done anything after her first Indy race. At one time Danica came into the IRL wishing to be a racecar driver. Enter her former husband who convinced her that there was much more money to be made by wearing a bathing suit and tight fitting black dress and staying in front of a camera talking about antifreeze, go daddy and how to peek under her hood. I am not against what she is now doing, however, it has made being a racecar driver the number two option on her career path. Danica is the most over hyped under preforming person on the track, she takes a first class car and rides (yes, rides not race) back there with the independent teams. Her biggest percentages of passes come when the start and park group pull off of the track. Danica is a marketing machine that can generate a lot of money, however, she has proven that generating money is no substitute for talent.
Danica is, at best, a mid pack ARCA driver if she had great equipment to drive.
Over hyped?

Did you actually expect anything different?

Money marketing machine?(see above)

Any other driver would still be running the Nationwide series.

As I stated before, it's halfway through the season and people expect her to be good.

I agree with her priority in her first season, she said she wanted to finish races.

That's it.

That's what Tony stated also.

Drivers aren't complaining about her.

If someone offered you an chance to make as much money in 4 hours as you make in a month, would you do it?

I just don't see what's with all the hype is about nor the ridicule.

Or the ridicule comes with hype.

But it's not coming from her or the drivers she races with.

Since that's not happening.

I don't read too much into it.

you don't hear the the drivers she races with complaining , because Nascar told them not to , she was in the nationwide series for 2 years and never was a winner or even close , I'm sure if you look back when Montoya , and Hornish came to cup , they weren't mentioned 40 times a broadcast , with the hype comes the fact that a true nascar fan , wants to see more than running 26 th every week , and she had more cup races than any other rookie in the history of cup ....

"you don't hear the the drivers she races with complaining , because Nascar told them not to"

Of course they did.

"she was in the nationwide series for 2 years and never was a winner or even close"

NO, she wasn't.

She had 13 starts in her first year part- time schedule.

She finished 4th in one and 10th in another.

"comes the fact that a true nascar fan , wants to see more than running 26 th every week".

23rd this week.

David Regan was 26th.

Maybe we should shit can him?

Nope, don't hear much about the drivers that finish AFTER her.

Seems people are hoping she fails, before giving her a chance.

If she was hyping herself 1/2 as much as the media is, then I could see a valid point but she isn't.

So, give her a chance.

Meaning, at least more than a 1/2 season's worth.

if you put any of the guys that finished behind her in her car , they would do better , shes timid , just trying to finish , if she needs more time to learn go back to Nationwide , most the teams that finish behind her don't have the money to have competitive cars ..and as far as Regan you hear his name sometimes when they announce the lineup , I am a fan of racing and its just sad that there are women in the lower divisions of nascar that are running underfunded cars and have spent years working their butts off for a chance to run cars that Danica fell into , and isn't making the best of ....

I wouldn't doubt it.

A half a season doesn't make you a driver.

Sometimes 10 or 15 seasons don't.

Getting a good job is more about politics than talent.

Keeping one does.

You miss the complete point, since Danica first came into the IRL she never lived up to any of the hype, yes she won one rain shortened race in Japan, however she is like Lennie Pond (1973 Cup Rookie of the Year) he won one rain shortened race at Talladega but just like Danica if the race had continued there were cars ready to freight train both of them on the restart. Danica did nothing in Nation Wide, except for Daytona which is a different animal she has stunk on every cup start. She is not very good at all in traffic and is in a first class, Hendrick Car, making a 25 to 30th place car out of a car that is capable of winning. James Henchcliff has shown that the Andretti Go Daddy car can win with an average driver in it, that is something Danica never did. Kyle Petty is spot on, Danica is in her ride because of marketing ability and not driving ability. Danica is no longer a young driver and might have already hit her peak.
Seems you have issues.

Not a fan of hers.

I can't see myself arguing over a driver I don't care about.

If NASCAR took your attitude towards every driver as you do Danica.

we wouldn't have but 5 to 7 drivers on the track.

Who said any thing about her being a Champion? Your words not mine. Name the Champions? Stewart and Johnson and Gordon and Keselowski. There are some good quality drivers who haven't come that close to winning a Championship, so what's the problem?
Shows how much you know about nascar...You didn't even acknowledge that Matt Kenseth & Kurt Busch have won the championship since Jeff Gordon's last Championship. BTW if it wasn't for the chase, Johnson & Stewart would only be two time champions; Carl Edwards would be a two time champion as well; Kevin Harvick would also have a championship to his name & Jeff Gordon would've added two more to his resume puting him only one away from catching Dale Sr and Richard Petty. Oh and by the way, both Labontes are still active and both have championships to their name.

NASCAR of ALL about the money so Danica has a very safe position. Since you stated that if NASCAR took my position there would only be five to seven drivers, who would they be and more important who would they NOT be. Danica has YET to prove a Damn thing but she is a willing participant in the circus that is the Danica show. I will never forget before the Daytona 500 she was giving critiques of other drivers. If you are going to critique winning drivers in NASCAR, first become a winner. Reminds me of what Teresa Earnhardt said about Dale Jr., "Before you start acting like a champion, first become a champion".
"she was giving critiques of other drivers"?

She was?

Like what?

I recall other drivers and commentators "critiquing" HER.

19 races and she has to "prove" something?

ALREADY?

"circus that is the Danica show".

Any other driver would dream of being in the same circus.

Wait until the first black driver enters the field.

Since Wendell Scott.
