How rational is the hysteria over H1N1?

Full story: The Morning Call

''A flu pandemic in 1918 killed tens of millions of people all over the world.'' Paul Carpenter paul.carpenter@mcall.com T he dual main drags of Tijuana -- Avenida Revolucion and Avenida Constitucion -- were teeming with their usual sleaze, when a vendor cart filled with fruit cups came along.

I don't disagree with Paul on this. The MC reminded us all, a few weeks ago, about the so called Swine flu pandemic in 1976. At least this time, the Government does not have us lining up for innoculations that are experimental at best. In 1976 25 percent of the country was given some type of so called swine flu shot. Many more were sickened by the shot than the actual flu!!

Good column! This whole Swine Flu thing was blown WAY out of proportion. People became scared little chickens and thought the sky was falling. I even saw a couple of people walking around my neighborhood wearing surgical masks! It's just amazing how much people panic and how scared people get when something like this gets mentioned.

Oh my God! A person in California has a rare illness! My GOD! We could be next!

LMAO! Mass hysteria...

Amused, its the same type of panic you seem to have over people who moved here from NY and NJ. I say that without malice and deepest respect for your opinions. You and I have a lot in common politically.

Thank you Paul for being the voice of reason! I have been to Tijuana several times in the past 2 years and I love it there. It is not the same place it was years ago and it gets such a bum rap. Plus, this ridiculous hysteria over the flu is just a bunch of ignorant media folks trying to turn boring news days into something.

I wouldn't call it "panic," per se. Shocked and overwhelmed, definitely, but not panic. I also respect your opinions and they DO make me think a bit more openly.

What did Rohm Emmanuel say? "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

All the Liberal slanted news outlets crammed this down our throats as the Obabble administration salivated over how this would justify their national healthcare agenda.

Correct! If they push this propaganda may be no one will realize the Amreican tax payer just gave the UAW 10 billion dollars with 0 return and that is just the first shoe to drop because crysler will still fail and GM is next. The largest political tax payer rip off in history and its just the start.

It really funny that you people didn't even bother to read the column.

If you did you would realize that, as usual, PC didn't really say anything.

Leave it to you bloated boneheads to turn an empty shell of a column in Obama this and liberal that- you don't even realize how pathetic you are.

If a truly deadly pandemic strikes, and there's no reason to believe it can't (unless your alias appears above), let's hope it takes you all and the others of your mental (in)ability and persuasion first.

Actually, for a change he DID say something... and something without his usual chip-on-the-shoulder sarcasm & anger. He's right: We humans do a terrible job at evaluating what we ought to reasonably fear. I am FAR more likely to be done in by a rabid racoon than by the flu... but where is the hysteria about said racoon?

Well, in all fairness you can shoot a racoon that looks rabid. As much as I'd like to, its problematic to shoot everyone that sneezes

You bought Made in China, loved NAFTA, GATT, CAFTA, etc. You bought cheap things at Walmart, cheaply built and priced Asian cars. Then our new 'House-of-Cards' economy came crashing down but what did you say?:

"Look at these libs, these socialists
destroy everything they touch."

It's called tragic-comedy.

I don't remember them asking for my opinion for the stuff they decree. Did they ask for yours? They do as they please and we have to live under it.

It's funny how panic works.
Because it's called Swine Flu the Egyptians are killing all of the pigs in Egypt.
Some places were calling it the Mexican flu. If that name caught on the Egyptians would probably be killing Mexicans.

Thank you so much for a rational look at this fear induced and totally unnecessary "crisis." Most of the cases of flu in Mexico were in Baja, D.F., and in a semi-circle around D.F. Unfortunately, I am not at all certain that Americans "get it" that Mexico is a really big country with 31 states! This CDC/WHO/Media created attack on a soverign nation is hurting innocent children in Mexico and needs to stop. Please have your wife read "Yucatan Living" and tell her that we would love to see her come for a visit. We promise - no bugs!
