English is the language of the United States and a requirement for citizenship, so if you don't want to learn english then the solution is to go back where you came from.

Your compassion is overwhelming. And your reading comprehension is beyond belief.

I find it atrocious that some Mexican immigrants want so many special accomodations becausr they do not speak English yet they are so cruel to the truly down-trodden from their own country. Shame on them!

OMG when do the sympathy ploys end? Now people who come here from Mexico that don't speak Spanish want sympathy. I sympathize with our children in public schools who's education is affected because classmates do not know English.

If I were to move to another country I would learn the language. It's called assimilation.

Learn English!

A second language is great, but English is the language of the USA. We can't ever become the great nation we were without common values, principles, and language!

If I moved to Mexico I damn sure would have to learn Spanish!

Theodore Roosevelt, 1907
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicted upon the persons becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, We have but room for one language here, and that is the English Language., and we have but room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American peoples..

America has "FREE" English classes available nationwide.

Maybe that will encourage people, something is free. <sarcasm>

Not in Baja California and the Mexican border Cites but you have a point, it's a good idea to at least start learning.

Regarding this article I muse argue that it's not the lack of Spanish in NY that's a barrier but rather it's a lack of the persons desire to learn the language that everyone else is speaking.

It is not a requirement for citizenship if they have been here for 15 years. They can take the test in their native language.

It is a requirement for Naturalization only but not a requirement for legal residents, visa holders or those on passports.

She has come here to work and does not know Spanish or English. She should be taking English classes not Spanish. I know the rule states those who become or try to become US citizens needs to speak English. But if you have a work permit then you should also be learning to speak English. No one should be able to take the citizenship test in their own language especially when it is an archaic language.

Come to California; we have all languages; most illegals are not living marginally; and there is an endless amount of tax payer money we give out to illegal immigrants; in fact, although I'm White, when I go to the store, I hear very little English being spoken.

Sky is blue, Grass is green, water is wet and WE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE. Now if it was at the UN that spanish was a barrier then I would understand but guess what this is America, you come her you conform to this country, you don't demand WE CONFORM TO YOU.

To in most cases send money out of the country. Then "move" back after they make enough to set themselves up as king and queens back home.

The answer to both of your posts is that there are many here in the United States from Mexico, Russia, the Middle east who have been here for years and still REFUSE to get out of their little Ghettos and learn another way of life or even learn English. Oh, btw there is such a thing as spell check on the forum. The little red lines means you have misspelled something or used a word for which there is no common spelling.

For those that have lived here for 40 years and have become citizens and refuse to speak English there might be an good explanation behind their never really using English: it is the people around them allow them to regress.
