Hi Jon.
Thank you very much. This means a great deal to me. After surving and recovering from an accident which should have killed me (9 years ago), my wife wanted to take me back to Oaxaca for my 50th birthday-to where the good times started for me. The Australian Embassy advises that Aust. citizens must stay away from Oaxaca. We have heard from US media that people were being decapitating people and that tourists had been killed...caught up in the violence. I did not believe it as I spent a lot of time living outside Pochutla with Zapotecs. My favourite place on the planet is the Zocalo en la Ciudad de Oaxaca.
Thanks mate. Stephen

I am in Oaxaca escaping a northern US winter. Oaxaca is safe! The squabbles between a couple of out lying villages do not affect tourists. I will be here 3 months.
The sad and bad news is from northern Mexico. Oaxaca remains a wonderful and safe place. I walk streets at night with more of a sense of safety than in my home city.

I am due to go back to Oaxaca from Australia later this year./but the Australian Government says that Oaxaca is too dangerous due to 2 groups of indigenas fighting. Can someone tell ne what has beeb going and who is fighting? I want to go to Ciudad de Oaxaca, but if the Zapotecs are fighting, is it safe anywhere in Oaxaca?

I am a single, retired school teacher who lives in Oaxaca de Juarez in el Centro where it is absolutely safe. I walk alone in the evenings, and have never felt the least bit threatened or unsafe. We have no issues here with safety. While there are often peaceful demonstrations, few people pay them any mind. This is after all the capital of the state. I've met several Australians here. Come on. You will be fine. The worst thing I've encountered is the taxi without seat belts. Government notices always err on the side of caution.
