Oaxaca enjoys calm after storm

Nice flik.
This place is a lot prettier now that the revolution has been squelched and the striking teachers have been bought off. Several parks have been spruced up nice and many streets are swept nearly every day. Most of the political graffiti is gone.
On the other hand, the chief of police was murdered in the park a week or so ago along with
a couple of innocent bystanders, and two rich businessmen were kidnapped on two succesive days.
All of this happened in broad daylight.
One night I witnessed a man and his little girl get mugged by two young toughs across the street
from where I am staying.
The most perverse thing I discovered here was that
the teachers who DIDN'T try to destroy the city but kept their schools open haven't been paid for
nine (I think) months. They tried to have a modest hunger strike in the town center but were
gone (rousted?) after a few days. When I asked a
few locals about this gross injustice, they just
shrugged and said "This is Mexico".
On the other other hand the little city I grew up in (much smaller than Oaxaca) has two murders a month¡!

Its a shame though. After all the courage that was displayed by the protestors and the cowardice of the others sat at home conforming to a corrupted governmental society, fear still lives in "individuals". I know just how those people feel about their government. We have a president like that. Except that Americans are the biggest cowards in the world. You dont see large groups of people marching together unless you are gay. This generation is truly the result of years of propaganda and money.
