We've been down this road before.
We help Mexico crush the huge cartels and several smaller cartels come in to fight for those cartels' customers. Congress might as well pass a bill to jettison that $1.4 billion into space.
We've learned nothing.
Attacking suppliers doesn't work. Somebody new will always be able to take their place. And demand, while we can educate people about the dangers of drug use people are always going to do drugs. They're especially not going to be convinced to stay away from illegal drugs when many legal drugs are as dangerous and oftentimes more dangerous than illegal drugs.
A legal, taxed, and regulated drug market is the only way to put the cartels out of business and stop this senseless violence.

As a retired American living in Mexico these 14 years, I see it all around me: the business of Mexico IS the drug business. Anyone who thinks that the Mexicans or the involved Americans are going to do anything to interfere with the single largest economic engine in North America needs to think again. Making it all legal would go a long way toward stopping the violence but do nothing to reduce the traffic and consumption. The power elite on both sides of the border spin a good yarn but in reality support and protect the movement of illegal narcotics. It's all a joke on the American people. Hah, hah! And I might add, ho ho!
