Has violence in Matamoros increased in the last year? The state department web site mentions matamoros for harrassment but not for violent crime. I have friends who live in Matamoros and they have told me over and over again that there has been no increase in violence in Matamoros. Are there any stats out there regarding violent crime in Matamoros?

My daughter wants to go on a mission trip to Matamoros, Mexico. I haven't decided to let her go b/c of all the violence in Mexico. Can anyone tell me how much violence has actually been in this part of Mexico since all of these drug wars have started?

My mission trip to Matamoros, Mexico has been cancelled because of the violence i'm assuming, and I'm trying desperately to prove that it's not dangerous in that area so I would like to know as well.

Bless her heart
a lot of people here do need help
but as a parent here on the border I would not advise it
as the saying goes
if you don't play with fire
you won't get burned
but situations here are very intense
first they fire then questions are asked
I too have two sons
believe me I don't even let them go to get tortillas
especially go out at night (they're 18yrs. old)
but now even during the day it's dangerous
I hope she understands helping others doesn't mean risking
her life because here we're all at risk as far as a stray bullet
I love Mexico and to tell you the truth people here are more nice as oppose to people from Brownsville
But right now you can actually feel the tension especially when you're driving through the ciy and you see SUV's with no license plates and very dark tinted windows driving through red lights.
I'm sure her services are also needed in her community
May her decision and yours be wise

does it matter how much violence is in matamoros? one act of violence is enough to kill you daughter. right? so why send her. you risk her getting raped tortured then ransom then you pay it then they kill her anyways. now do you fell like sending her?

Just keep an eye on the situation, I work in Matamoros (live in the US), I have seen some of the gun battles, but they are random and not directed at the people, it is gang against gang or against the military. Word on the street is this will be resolved soon (read one gang winning, probably the Gulf Cartel) and things will quiet down again

Mexico is not safe now,You do not know who is responding a mission girl could bring a high price there.I was in Matamaras in 2007.Things are not the same now, even then it was dangerous.Do not ask someone go under Mexico drug wars in Matamaras that will give you your answer.I have been there 4 times and I speak Spanish,I have friends there.Even the Mexican people are terrified.Research the wars activites yourself.I wouldn't go there now.No way will your daughter be safe. Mexican's innocent people have been murdered, tortured burned, kidnapped, sold into prostitution. As many as 60,000.Now do you think you want to send her?

I am now living in Matamoros with my wife and 2 kids. I am from Michigan and my wife and I decided to move to Mexico after my Mexican National Wife was refused her Visa. I have been in Matamoros since March 20, 2012 and have not seen any issues so far. The area is in bad shape and not a very clean but the people are nice and I found some great seafood places to eat. My wife and kids speak Spanish and I do not. I do not go downtown or to any night clubs, bars or travel at night time and everything seems to be safe here so far.
