Don't Worry - The Sun Will Only Vaporize Earth If We Don't Change Our Orbit

Our forecast for today was a high of 39°F and very little chance for precip. tonight (and just a trace if any occurred.) So, it got up to 33°F, and NWS now advises some areas could get up to 1/2" of sleet tonight. The road crews who got called out late are gonna be thrilled!:-(

Actually, it seems to me that at least 20 or 30 years ago, I'd seen illustrations showing that the Sun (once a red giant) would engulf the Earth (no details about what the Earth's orbit would then be were given.) It didn't appear the earth was going to come back out...

Also, rereading the article more carefully, I note that it really says we "only" have under 1 billion years, as by then the sun will have expanded enough to render the Earth uninhabital. That's still a long way off, but, "only" 1 billion years is the soonest I have heard / read that this would happen. Hmmm...
