Guanajuato, Mexico

A borderline experience with Nogales

The good thing about our border towns is they're close. Cross a bridge or a checkpoint and, hey, you're in another country.

I completely dislike your article. There is a lot more to both Nogales' than what you wrote and saw. There's no point to list everything else there is to see because I already wasted enough time reading your article..... It's unfortunate for people like you to give Nogales this type of reputation. An believe me there's more to just Obregon Street and La Roca and La Hacienda del Caballo Rojo..... Ignorant!

I offer for you to return to our town and I can personally serve as your guide. I also offer to introduce you to people with more knowledge of our twin city. It's unfortunate that you interviewed someone who apparently is not so familiar with Nogales. Come on back and interview someone born and raised in these beautiful small towns. And please do not compare to a big city as Tijuana Baja California, not even close in population. Did anyone bother to tell you how important we are as far as something we use in our daily meals??????

Look, of course I know there's a lot more to Nogales -- neighborhoods, schools, churches, factories. Just as I know there's more to Mexico than whorehouses and painted jackasses.

But most TOURISTS (who naturally leave their cars in Arizona) will walk across the border hoping to get a taste of Mexico and will only see what's in that first three or four blocks south of the gate. Amigos, what they'll see is a disgrace they'll carry back to their stateside homes and in their hearts forever.

If the people of Nogales are comfortable with that, hey, it's their city. If they're not, denying the filth and unloading anger on a reporter won't change this reality:

That Nogales, the part of Nogales tourists will see, is an embarrassment to the Mexican people and an insult to a great nation.

That's because those type of tourists "are" that "d um b." They will believe that that part of Nogales is "all" of Mexico.

...but the way you wrote this piece, it's still biased. I think you know it too!

There was an immigration special on TV last night that discussed Nogales a lot.
Seems like this town is a no-man's land where ICE works 24/7 to curb the invasion accross the border.
The town is rife with crime and anti-american sentiment.
Maybe we should just build the fence north of Nogales and let the mexicans have it. No great loss. Let the mexican government fight their own crime.

Some of your comments could be right. But again, how can you compare a bus stop plaza of Nogales with the Zócalo from México D.F? Have you ever been to the Zócalo? I don’t think so! Because you will understand that it can't be compare at all.
Good job with the guides you selected (SARCASTIC)! Pick some natives from Nogales that would know more and that are grateful with the city that she/he is eating from.
I have been to different cities in the U.S I have seen the good and the bad side of it, But! That doesn’t mean that I will create a bad impression of that city or the nation at all. Every city in the world has good and bad sides too and that doesn’t mean that its entire country is like that. I consider having the intelligence to understand that concept and not judge a city or entire nation by one city street and/or ignorant guide .

By the way you express your self on previous comments, it looks you simply dislike Mexican people. I’m not asking to like us either, but like it or not border towns and border cities economies depend tremendously on us Mexican people!

I'm not Mexican--my family is originally from various parts of Eastern Europe--but I'd be proud to be. Great people, great country.

Mexicans are great people up to the point they sneak accross the border to break American laws and steal American's identities.
Then they become common criminals.
Viva la legals!

So often we over look the faces behind the newspaper headlines. There is a lot we, as Americans are doing to contribute to the "smarm" in Nogales. American Corporations? Sweatshops? Industrialized farming?

You have to take a look at the things that contribute to that poverty and "smarm" before you judge.

And, EXSF? Shame on you.
