I can't wait for the DVD. Just one more thing I miss about Hawai'i. Too bad the recent events with Aloha Airlines has cast a dark cloud over the festival.

More worse, ATA just went belly-up. Major player in Hawai'i tourist carriers.

Hawaiian hula is one of the most developed of the Polynesian dance forms that is constantly evolving and changing.
The contest celebrates the traditional ancient kahiko.
It also celebrates influence of faraway places such as Tokyo and Mexico. There are halaus in many places.

Wow looks like it was a fabulous show, wish I was ther to see it all, cant wait for the DVD to come out. Right on Mexico, great to see other countries enter. What colorful costumes. Goodluck to all. And sorry to hear about ATA, what a year for all businesses. Credits to all the Halaus all over the world, Im native hawaiian and dont even know how to dance, so Im really proud to see them come from other countries, Right on!

Kalakaua supported science, education, astronomy and international diplomacy. This is truly becoming the Merry Monarch Festival.

I lived on the Big Island (Kamuela)for 30 years and attended the Merrie Monarch each year. That is what I miss most about Hawai'i.
Good luck and May God Bless all of you.
Aloha...

Amen. Losing ATA is like losing a cruise ship.
