Bottom Line: Motorcycles are great, but you gotta be careful. Especially when its more than just you and the bike at risk. Its easy to forget that when you're having fun and the results can be tragic.

IN THE black hole of tragedy, a single candle burns all the brighter. That's a poetic cliche', until tragedy strikes. Then it becomes blindingly real. On more than one of their many get-togethers, Tami and Joe Battle let it be known to their dearest friends, Jennifer and Jim Capoot: "If anything ever happens to us, we want you to take care of our kids." Sure, absolutely.
Then they went back to their barbecue, or whatever. Who would have thought ...
On Jan. 22, Joe and Tami called the Capoots from a Fairfield eatery. They had taken their motorcycle out for a spin and were on their way to Vacaville to make plans for their Valentine's Day move into a home just two doors from the Capoots on Colby Court. They never made it.
Their speeding 'cycle hit a parked car near Cooper School and Capoots' home.
In an instant, their children, Jasmine "Jazi," 17, and Joey, 10, lost their mother and father. They were suddenly alone, robbed of their loving parents, guardians, friends; their heart and soul. But in the days that followed, their immediate and extended community of families made it clear that they are anything but orphans.
The first of many candles was lit.
JENNIFER and Jim Capoot have three children of their own: Jillian, 22, attending Sac State; Jamie, 19, a student at Contra Costa Jr. College, and Justine, 17, a Will C. Wood student. "We knew what we had to do," Jim said shortly after hearing the heartbreaking news. Their promise to "take care of our kids" became reality. It was so understood that Joe's and Tami's families totally support the idea. The Capoots opened their home and their hearts to Jazi and Joey. It meant a few changes to the place. Even now, a small corps of volunteers is finishing a project that will turn the empty space above a living room into a second-level bedroom for Jazi and one of the Capoot girls. Joey will get his own room, complete with camouflage motif on the walls. It's all coming together.
Jim Capoot is a former CHP officer. Since 1993 he has been a member of the Vallejo PD. Jennifer is the administrative assistant at Vaca Chamber of Commerce.
Together, they are expanding their family from five to seven, and all that that implies. Part of the cost of the remodel was borne by donations, but it won't begin to touch the total estimates. "We'll work it out," Jim said. He praised City Manager Laura Kuhn and building chief Jay Salazar for fast-tracking the building permit.
Meanwhile, Jazi is back at W. C. Wood, and Joey is at Cooper School. They have more than just a house to go home to; the Capoots' has always been a second home to them. Tami and Jennifer were seventh-graders together in Vallejo. Justine and Jazi have been baby-pals since birth.

As of Jan. 22, Tami was a directory and communications supervisor at UC, Davis.
ALL over town, more candles were lit.
Even before funeral services for Tami and Joe, funding support for Joey and Jazi began. A Brown (Tami's maiden name)-Battle Memorial fund was set up at Travis Credit Union here. Donations have already topped $15,000. Motoring friends created memorial T-shirts and large stickers; sales raised $3,000. Keanu's restaurant on Elmira Rd., one of Joe's favorites, created a "Joe Battle Plate." All proceeds went to the fund. It was so successful that Keanu owners have decided to keep it on the menu, Jennifer said. Fleet Feet sponsored a 5K run, with raffle, in support of the kids. Tami was a runner. On Monday, Feb. 28, Barber Joe's on Main St. plans a Cut-a-Thon fundraiser. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Joe's hairstylists will cut-and-give to the Battle kids. First come, first served. Raffle prizes, too. Joe's is personally motivated. For eight years, Joe Battle tended his hairstyling chair and customers at Joe's shop. He joined his good friend, Jay Tee (Joe Trujillo) on a music path; rappers in a Vallejo group, N2Deep. A golden record above his hair-chair spoke to the dream.
A BLAZE of candles: The Capoots have started proceedings for guardianship of Jazi and Joey. Grandparents Nancy "ma-ma" Schick, and Virginia "grandma Jinny" Grondin are guardians of the kids' estate. "A lot of people have come forth," Jim said. "We're the lucky ones" by bringing Jazi and Joey into the family. Jennifer agreed: "We're just finishing what Tami and Joe started." They'll do it with love, and candles. Lots and lots of candles.

I normally avoid Dick Rico's ramblings but I did see this one yesterday and just figured someone else must have written it for him.

Sweet Jesus Granny, I voted for the fool, and I can't stand him now. Lets see, how many more years do we have, before we are disappointed and frustrated by another liar?

Who is he? I didn't know he did this on a regular basis until I read your post. I assumed he was a family friend.

I was gonna ask, but hey...

The think about Obummer, is that there won't be any miracle, he's pretty much stuck us, and who would want to follow in his footsteps. We're screwed for a LONG time.

How could you know? It's not your fault. People were sick of Bush and were ripe for political lies. There isn't anywhere to go, as many of those poor people in other countries hail him as well. Well, not all of them.

While the second sentence was uncalled for, I do agree with the first one. This was a residential area and directly in fromt of a elementary school and park.
