Rep: Green Day's Armstrong getting treatment
NEW YORK Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is headed to treatment for substance abuse.
Sunday's announcement by the band's rep comes after the 40-year-old frontman had a meltdown onstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday. As Green Day was wrapping up its performance during the all-star, two-day concert, Armstrong profanely complained that the band's time was being cut short.
"One minute left, one minute (expletive) left. You're gonna give me (expletive) one minute?... I'm not (expletive) Justin Bieber, you (expletives)!" he yelled (although Bieber was not part of the night's festivities).
Armstrong smashed his guitar before leaving the stage.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Green Day apologized "to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival" and said its set was not cut short by Clear Channel, the host of the two-day festival.
The Grammy winning band also is canceling some of its promotional appearances. It is due to release the album "Uno" on Tuesday, the follow-up to "21st Century Breakdown," released three years ago. "Uno" is the first in a trilogy of albums; the second is to be out in November, and the last in January. The band is due to kick off a nationwide tour Nov. 26 in Seattle.
Armstrong was hospitalized in early September in Bologna, Italy, for an undisclosed ailment, but recovered well enough to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 6. Since then, the band has made a series of performances, including a "Good Morning America" performance and a New York City concert for the launch of Nokia Music on Sept. 15. No interviews of the band were allowed that evening, but the band chatted with fans and Nokia and AT&T executives before performing for about two hours.
It's unclear what Armstrong is receiving treatment for; in 2003, he was arrested for DUI, and has acknowledged in the past taking various drugs but has said he now eschews them.
Green Day is one of rock's top acts and had huge success with its 2004 politically charged album "American Idiot," which went on to become a Broadway musical. Armstrong performed for a stretch in the musical.
Most recently, he was a mentor on the NBC talent competition "The Voice."

According to RS Richie does not even know anything about it. What source do you have for your statement? According to twitter Billy Joe entered rehab today.

I think at this point it doesn't matter who said what to whom, or what Jon, Richie, or BJA said, the important thing is that BJA is getting help. I have to admit I was suprised to read about what he did on stage. Sure, BJA is known to be outspoken in all, but not to the point of smashing guitars and ranting like he did in Vegas. If you look at the picture of Richie and BJA together, I could sort of tell Richie looked like he was sort of reaching out to him, he had the look of conern, maybe I could be wrong. I am glad that BJA is getting help, from what I understand he is still married and I think he has one or two children, I am not exactly sure. Lets just hope that BJA takes advantage of the help he will be getting and hopefully comeback healthier and better.

While I don't listen to Green Day & don't know anything about BJA, it's clear to me that he needs help & probably wouldn't be saying & doing the things he has done recently, if he was not dealing with substance abuse.

That is ridiculous! I feel for Billie Joe. To have someone cut your PLANNED appearance short in the middle of a show. I hope Billie Joe sues the crap out of whoever pulled that on him. I wouldn't pay to see Usher and would leave immediately if I was there.

I remember when Bon Jovi was on Leno and Howie Mandell was there. He invited the audience to join him in Vegas and half of the audience or at least one-third left before Bon Jovi came out. Artists and producers shouldn't allow such disrespectful treatment of ANY act. Nobody is on top forever. Of course I would never dream of leaving Bon Jovi to watch Howie. That was a weird audience IMO.

The problem is his time wasn't cut, he is just an azz with a substance abuse problem. His rep has already reported that Clear Channel did not cut their time, everything was as scheduled.

He's such a jerk... he was acting like a little kid. I was disgusted with his rant and was embarassed for him, the band and his family.

Let's hope he gets better and grows up SOON!!!

I've seen a picture of Billie & Richie together but haven't heard about Billie saying sorry.
I saw a few photos where they were together laughing too..but I agree as that doesn't mean he apologized for anything.

With everything else that went on that night, I was just curious if it was in a written or video interview as I'd like to read/see what happened.

Nicely said, rosa3! I agree 100%. It's sad seeing someone mess up, especially when they have given something good to so many - great music. It sounds like BJA has been working hard. I hope he recovers quickly.

I have played music for over forty years and can play every style. I have been in many bands including those that play rock and also those that play jazz and classical. So, if you are a professional musician, then I hope there is some other explanation for your strange comment. There is plenty of music I don't like but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it and realize the technical difficulty of it. Green Day is a fine band and has talent, but they aren't anything especially impressive technically. Besides the fact that you are comparing apples to oranges, they are both very good bands. I am sure there are countless other musicians out there that can dispute your claim, but this is not "rocket science". Especially considering Sambora and Jon are both far more skilled at what they do than Billie Joe or anyone else in Green Day. I hope that your commentary isn't reflective of your musical ability otherwise you should probably consider a different profession.

Now as being a touring musician myself I will say that Green Day has created more bands then Bo Jovi ever has or ever will. They both are bands that have reached the masses, but one thing separates the 2.#1 you have those with no love or compassion for music rocking out to BON JOVI. They are the ones who buy every CD,go to every show, they are the soccer moms, the ones who have paid for the bands life style. Now when it comes to Green Day they have spawned a new generation of punks. Green day may have made it big, but there roots came from GILMAN street, and today there are many punk bands around and about who would enver of started if not for Green Day. i say green day has done more for the true music fan, then BON JOVI has. Compare the fans, compare bands today, and I bet my life you find more people saying they were influenced by Green day compared to BON JOVI.
