When you bet on a horse and it comes in less than first place, is there any kind of win? Or do only those who are first pay?

I would love to ask Jay, but I have no contact with him. I hoped one or more of the people on here who know about gambling would give a straight answer. The question wasn't about Jay, it was about gambling. People on this forum often seem to know a lot about gambling, using the slang terms that one would use among a group of people who are familiar with the subject. I have not even the most basic knowledge of gambling, wouldn't know how to place a bet or how to know if I won or lost. It occurred to me that betting on a horse that came in second or third might not mean a total loss, maybe it means a lower payout than that of a first place winner. I probably was naive to hope for such information from here. Let's just skip it, since I won't be likely to use the information and was merely curious. I should have known it would be twisted to an opportunity to make a nasty remark about Jay. I know, the thread is about Jay's bankruptcy, so such an answer could still be on topic. Geez, talking to youse guys is tiring and frustrating for someone not blessed with a one-track mind.

Aurora, CO, to whom are you directing your comment? The straight answer I wanted was about betting, not Jay's losses. Really, Jay should be quite amused at the amount of attention paid to his finances. It certainly amuses me. Unless he owed me money, I couldn't care less about what he wins or loses, except that I hate to see anyone caught up in an addiction that brings them unhappiness. Have a nice weekend.

Backstretch, thanks for the maybe straight answer. I am still clueless on the gambling thing, but it's okay. I am way too old to start learning something that sounds so much like a foreign language to me, especially when I will never use it. I don't even begin to understand what the bottles are for, unless you mean I'm supposed to bring the booze. Bad enough to be totally out of the loop about the lingo, I don't think I need to make it worse with VO. If there's a nice little lounge somewhere close, I'll meet you there, Dutch treat. Hope someone is playing some cool saxophones and violins while I wait.

Marga, I totally agree! He was born to sing. It's important to note that he is self-taught, and he still sings the songs he sang when he was a teenager and then in his mid-twenties. Most singers would have been forced to change the key or style after so many years, but Jay still sings the hardest ones just as he did 50 years ago. I so admire his determination to entertain, even when he's ill. He is still one amazing man!

You know, i never thought of that! Now that Beau lives on the opposite coast and has his own music group, he really isn't a dependent, is he? Not that it concerns any of us, being that it's personal and private. I'm sure everyone who has a legitimate need to know has been provided with the facts. Let's see, that would probably be Jay, his tax preparer, uh, and uh, gosh, I guess that's about all.

I booked, or maybe Peter, Jay And The Americans in '69 but the leader wanted more than AFTRA scale so they walked. Their manager was a guy who worked for Roulette Records but they were on United Artists.
