If one person calling for a little sensitivity cramps your style and self expression, I have to wonder about your intellectual ability. Limited vocabulary? It's an overused word, not unlike the ubiquitous F bomb.

Wrong, to an enigineer or specialist in many disciplines it's a valid useful word/ Likewise here, if you act as if your intelligence is retarded, i.e. withdrawn from the norm or mean, you own "Retarded" complete with a 16-foot glass-blown two-color, three-step neon sign affixed atop your point there. Here let me help you with the chinstrap and watch the cord.

It's not my fault you chose to feel bad because of a sonic event.

To an engineer or a specialist, it's a useful word. It's a verb. It has legitimate uses, as does the adjectival form. As an epithet, it needs to be retired. It's not a noun, and the emphasis goes to the second syllable, not the first.

Scared adolescents with impoverished vocabularies may believe otherwise.

Well, you're under a misapprehension here. Envy has nothing to do with it. The CHOICE to do drugs is stupid for ANYONE. I don't give a rap about the rest of her life. Drugs are not new. They were very much a part of the college scene in the 1960s. They were available. You don't take drugs by "mistake", particularly if you're intelligent and aware of the repercussions, which have been publicized for so many years that you'd have to be braindead not to know about them. I'd say the same about ANY 19 year-old college kid: Are you COMPLETELY out of your mind playing with heroin?
Now, about the ethical issue that's been raised...It was suggested that money alters a person's responsibility under the law. There are still people in this world who believe that to be a misuse of money, power and fame. Did the kid's family do this? We don't know. Is it something to be admired? Absolutely not.
When I see a poster dismissing all local residents as "rednecks", I'll call him/her on it. Not all of us are unfamiliar with the perspective that money can bend laws. Some of us simply reject the position as immoral.
This was NOT a mistake. It would be refreshing if people stood up and took responsibility for their lives, and the rest of us held them to it.
No misapprehension here. I was referring to the younger kids from upstate NY saying what a HO she was, how she should die etc. No, drugs are not new - they were there in my colleg days and making a CHOICE to do this particular drug is stupid - but my point was she made a mistake in choosing to use this drug, whether peer pressure was involved or whatever! We ALL make mistakes don't we in many ways. I don't believe for one second that anyone is admiring her for doing what she did. The fact is, no one except her family and this Ian dude knows what really happened. Anything beyond that is pure speculation and it should stop. Can't we move on? It appears she has.

If you insist on calling yourself names, go right ahead. I personally think that throwing around the R word is for 13 year olds who don't know any better. Lacks creativity, at the very least, and certainly shows a dearth of sensitivity. It's boorish and crude.
The "R" word? I thought they are now called Mentally Challenged or Mentally Handicapped?
It leaves the word Retard open to use on people who are purposely becoming idiots, morons, pinheads, and imbeciles. Not those who were born with Mongolism.

Thank you.. I had to sit through regents and maxed out my SATS so yes it's my vocabulary too. Considering half the bombastic rants that fly up here I'm kinda smut free so nobody's taking the R word from me except a sadistic autistic masochist on angel dust!
