Pakistan is situated between latitude 24 and 37 degrees North and longitude 62 and 75 degrees East. On the west border of the country is Iran, India is on the east, Afghanistan in the north-west, China in the north and the Arabian Sea is on the south

Pakistan has a strategically advantageous location vis a vis being a geographical centre of the Asian Continent. Forming a bridge between the Middle East and the Far East, Pakistan's can be a hub for trade and communication. A wide transportation network complements this strategic placement. With three major international airports and 38 domestic airports, Pakistan serves more than 50 international airlines.
Pakistan has a continental type of climate, characterized by extreme variations of temperature. Very high altitudes modify the climate in the cold, snow-covered northern mountains. Temperatures on the Balochistan Plateau are somewhat higher. Along the coastal strip the climate is tempered by sea breezes. In the rest of the country temperatures rise steeply in the summer and hot winds blow across the plains during the day. The daily variation in temperature may be as much as 11 degree C to 17 degree centigrade. Winters are cold with minimum mean temperature of about 4 degree centigrade in January

Sindh cabinet approves Thar coal project to generate up to 1,000MW power

Karachi: The Sindh Cabinet approved on Tuesday the Thar coal project for the generation of 600 to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity under public-private partnership. A draft bill to ban the use of old syringes was approved as well, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said while briefing journalists about the decisions taken by the Sindh Cabinet during its meeting on Tuesday.

The Cabinet also approved a draft bill to set up a medical university for women in district Benazirabad (formerly Nawabshah), a public-private partnership bill to launch the Keenjhar and Gorakh Hill projects and amendments in the Agriculture Act of 1939 to end the role of “middlemen”.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah decided to lease 610 forest acres in district Thatta and upgrade the taluka Shahdadpur hospital. It also decided to control price-hike during Ramazan.

The cabinet was briefed about the killing of Rehman Baloch (alias Rehman Dakait) in an alleged police encounter by Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, as well as the public reaction to the killing.

Participants of the meeting hoped that Dakait’s death will help improve the law-and-order situation in the city, especially Lyari. The ministers condemned the Gojra incident in Punjab and observed a one-minute silence over the killings of Christians there.

Marri said that the Thar coal project was the joint Engro-Sindh government venture, under which 1.1 billion dollars will be spent for coal mining and 2.2 billion dollars for power generation.

She said that the feasibility report of the project will likely be completed within two years. In order to expedite the utilization of the coal reserves by providing infrastructure development, the construction of an airport was underway at Islamkot, while efforts were also being taken to lay railway lines there.

She said that the People’s Medical College in Benazirabad will be given the status of a medical university for women.

Test burn at Thar coal deposits planned in March

28 Dec 2010

ISLAMABAD: In a major development, the government has finalised preparations for test burn in March next year on coal deposits in Sindh’s Thar desert for underground gasification which is expected to produce the much needed electricity almost equal to current power supplies besides sizeable oil production, senior nuclear scientist and Planning Commission member Dr Samar Mubarakmand disclosed on Monday.

Talking to Dawn, the renowned scientist said that only one per cent of the total Thar coal deposit on which he would start test burn in March could produce 10,000MW of electricity for 30 years and 100 million barrels of diesel. The electricity to be produced from block-5 would cost a maximum of Rs4 per unit, he said.

Spread over an area of 64 square kilometres, this is one of the eight coal blocks in Thar deposit. Another four blocks have been allocated to private companies from Australia, UAE, UK and a Pakistan firm Engro, which is in an advanced stage of arranging financing for the coal development, gasification and establishment of power plants. About four other blocks have yet to be allocated for development.

Mr Mubarakmand, who was given a one-year extension as member of the Planning Commission last week, said the deposit had the potential to transform Pakistan into a self-sufficient and energy-surplus country in a short span of eight to 10 years.

“It can produce 50,000MW of electricity for decades and 100 million barrels of oil for 500 years.”
