1988 was the year when rap/hip-hop really became recognized as its own genre & was here to stay. It saw the first rap grammy - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. The first rap album to win album of the year of all music - Public Enemy (It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Me Back). Also from that same album came the first world tour from a rap group. Also radio & billboard charts gave rap/hip-hop its own category. To have an idea of the power & influence the year had, here are some of the rap albums released in 1988:
1. Boogie Down Productions - By All Means Necessary
2. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Me Back
3. Eric B & Rakim - Follow the Leader
4. Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
5. EPMD - Strictly Business
6. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - I'm the DJ He's the Rapper
7. Ice-T - Power
8. Colors Soundtrack
9. Run DMC - Tougher than Leather
10. NWA - Straight Outta Compton
11. Eazy-E - Eazy-Duz-It
12. The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
13. Too Short - Born to Mack

I am sure you can find 4 or 5 great albums in a single year in years to follow, but considering where rap was only 1 year before, this was the best year in rap history. The genre was still being invented & so many different styles. It took the music industry by storm & severely closed the gap between pop music & metal at that time.

no doubt it was one of the greatest, maybe it's the greatest...

1994 is also DOPE... Nas' Illmatic and Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready To Die... 2 of the best rappers making their first album each

Of course I knew someone would say another year had some great albums & I understand that, but rap was already big in 1994, also Method Man's debut album that year. But that year changed history & from top to bottom better than any other. BDP, PE, Eric B & rakim's 2nd albums (all were better than the first) & debut album from NWA. They laid the path for Nas & Biggie & Tupac & Wu Tang.
