Well I for one still stick to my previous statement from months ago on this forum... Rap (true rap) requires skill bottom line. Most "average" people could pull a verse out there ass the way some of these underground freestylers do.

It is very sad to think that lots of radio stations are playing this crap over the air to be heard by young kids who now think its cool to be a thug and ok to go to jail... Using terms like "had to catch a case" to refer to being charged with a crime for something you did as if its just something that happens to you explains the mentality of many people listening to this type of music... It is very sad.. Even more sad is defending it...

Don't speak for hip-hop because you do not write hip-hop. The mainstream artists do not write real hip-hop. The elements are peace, knowledge, storytelling and respect. You think people want to kill each other? Rick Ross and Lil Wayne is not hip-hop.

Bboying, graffiti artists, DJing, MCing and the people are what controls how hip-hop is created.

It doesn't matter if its "mainstream" or whatever phrase you try to defend it with. It's what I hear today on TV, on the radio, in movies, and when the punk pulls up next to me on the road, etc. Whether you like it or not, it's HIP HOP!

No instruments are played, and the supposed "artist (LOL)" usually isn't even the one ripping off the 4 bar loop that is repeated 100 times throughout the "track" (cause its not a song), cause that might actually take a slight amount of brain power to put together (not really) and then they just talk (in broken English) about themselves and how much money they have (most of the cars in the vids are rented cause they don't really own cars that expensive) and then try to look as rediculous as possible in clothes that don't fit. If this is what you listen to, it doesn't leave much doubt as to how intelligent you could possibly be... If you were smart, you wouldn't want to look like a dumb ass, and you would want to be accepted, not hated... People with low IQ's are usually mad at the world, and don't really even know why, but its because their dense...
Did I mention they are all using each others quotes and catch words now cause their not smart enough to come up with their own... Drop it like its HOT!

Anyone with a rebuttal that includes personal attacks and profanity, is obviously too dumb to form a real defense. I whole-heartedly agree with the first opinion... Rap and hip hop is complete garbage and lacks intelligence. It is nothing but "musical" plagiarism, with slang and non-existing words to complete rhyme sequences. Pathetic. I'll stick to music that actually has messages worth hearing and structure worth listening to... Songs that are actually sang without pitch correction to music that was created (not stolen) by an actual musician. Let's be brutally honest here... Rap/hiphop is a festering cancer in our culture, perpetuated by the idiot mob that listens to it. Most intelligent people grow out of their rap/hiphop phase when they start reading at a 5th grade level (that is, if they ever listened to it in the first place!), so the fact that it has persisted and thrived from the 80's until now isn't because it's innovative and original... It's because stupid people multiply and these days, we are a nation literally bursting at the seams with idiots!

Your rebuttal is complete garbage. You must not have heard of lupe fiasco, talib kweli, common, immortal technique, etc. because that is a horrible statement saying that rap/hip hop has no "message worth listening to and structure worth listening to".
If you don't listen to it... fine, but don't criticize it based off one example of artists who glamorize the sex, drugs, and guns. There are plenty of artists whether it be mainstream or underground that do not speak of those things or speak against them. And there is plenty of intelligence that goes into structuring and bringing a message through in rap/hip hop. Not all rappers/artists are lacking intellect like you believe.

If you were to ask me, EVERY genre of music has it's fair share of ignorant people, not just hiphop, so therefore, hiphop isn't what makes people ignorant, or is the destruction of our society.
The Jazz Genre: I know for my damn self, a good percentage of jazz listeners are alcoholics ( since y'all wanna tap into a stereotypical aspect ), alot of Jazz artists died from years of alcohol abuse or drug. Alot of jazz listeners are also ignorant as hell. They really are nothing but "Sophisticated" Idiots whom find flaws in every human being but themselves
The Country Genre: don't get me fkin started, the ones that aren't racist, are black tryna fit in to a atmosphere they've been shunned from for centuries, and the music itself, produces songs that glorify getting drunk, bar fights, adultry....., this genre is FAAR from perfect
Rock ( the drug addicts alumni ): the ones that aren't already dead from drug overdose, or suicide, gotta be high to perform, promotes drugs, suicide, vandalism, in my opinion, just as brutal as rap
Classical Music: full of pompous bastards who think their sh!t doesnt stink, and have this "society should worship us" outlook on life, whom only give a flying fk about themselves
Gospel: one of my favorite genres that I'll always respect, but has a huge percentage of hypocrites, whom lifestyle constantly contradicts themselves

Just a few genres to illustrate music in general can be fked up at times, hiphop ain't the only flawed genre with flawed people, and to be honest, hiphop is why some of you pompous bastards aren't dead yet. I probably would go on a fkin murder spree with all the bullish!t I deal with day after day, It keeps me sane and keeps y'all safe, so fk any and all other opinions about hiphop.

And Candace Laytrene, you should know facts before quoting "hog vomit" statistics. Im a avid hiphop fanatic and STILL got a 2yr scholarship to Clemson University, not bragging, just a little ladder to help you reach the top shelf and grab a can of STFU.

Seriously, battling is only one facet of hip-hop. If you don't like diss tracks or battling, don't listen to it. Not every MC writes diss tracks. Reformed battle rapper Jin does not write insults nor uses profanity in his lyrics. Watsky is a nerdcore rapper who does not use profanity often. Most rappers or MCs lyrically are at a higher level in poetic writing than any other music genre. They meticulously practice their form. You are confusing battle rap and diss tracks with hip-hop. It is music about struggling and spreading knowledge. Again, if can't speak for hip-hop because you are not involved in the culture nor are an avid listener. That is like comparing classical music to swing music- swing might be influenced by classical music, but it ain't the same.

BTW IF there are "non-existing words", then it means you didn't check the dictionary hard enough. What "fictional" words in the English language did hip-hop make up that isn't in the dictionary other than some slang?

I like how you can't be bothered to spell check any of your super ultra over the top defensive comments. You resort to insults too easily because maybe you just don't have the vocabulary to express yourself properly without swearing. You dismiss jazz/ classical music (much higher degree of difficulty over hip hop) but only because its "boring" or have you never even tried enveloping yourself in another genre? Too scared to not be a fucking thug? What a disgrace people like you are.

You just resorted to insults in the last two sentences, so great job being a hypocritical idiot. Yes, I did just insult you. No, I don't care that I'm insulting you. Hiphop or rap is a very complex genre with what I believe is a higher degree of difficulty than jazz/classical music. I listen to almost every genre of music and Hiphop/rap is, to me, the most difficult. It is both more competitive and has a deeper rhyme scheme than other types of music. Not the mainstream (Drake, Lil Wayne, French Montana, 2 Chainz) type music, but the underground (Lupe, Talib Kweli, Common, Immortal Technique,
Slaughterhouse, Jedi Mind Tricks) type hiphop and rap. I am a rapper myself. No, I am not a thug nor do I act like one, although I did grow up mostly in the ghetto/hood. So, don't assume just because someone uses profanity or acts a certain way they are.

I don't really care because I've been made fun of since I was a little kid and learned how to have thick skin to idiot comments.

My knowledge of hip hop and rap is based entirely on top 40 radio so I'll admit I've never heard nor tried to listen to hip hop that's more thoughtfully developed than that garbage.
... to even claim jazz and classical are more easily performed kust doesnt seem right, because those genres require an ensemble of trained musicians because one can't learn how to play jazz or classical by just tuning into the radio. You have to go to a music academy if you want to be taken seriously. Are there rap academies I've never been aware of? Didn't think so.

I'm a metal head and now talk about all the different offshoot genres that stuff is way deeper than just some guy with a mic and a DJ. Many of the best examples of quality heavy music are from all over the world. Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, UK, shit even bands from the middle east and Japan can bring the thunder. There's no hip hop scene in many of those countries, only in america and Latin countries I suppose.

Sure I listen to, among other heavy music, black metal and as a drummer I'm not the most skilled in playing all the different types of extreme blast beats as that shit cannot possibly be learned without years of dedication and practice. An extreme metal drummer has to keep his entire body strong and flexible enough to withstand the rigors of gigging every night.

Do you happen to know anything about heavy music at all? It may sound like all screaming about the devil and loud squealing guitars but metal is more about the attitude of not letting yourself get unjustly fucked with, standing up for the persecuted, and what not.

I was calling out the guy that I replied to as a thug, not you man. His multiple posts to this thread exhibit total stupidity.

aight fu<ktard, lemme spell this out for you: ill type and respond however the fu<k i want. last i checked topix wasnt fu<king english class. the only people who bring up spelling and grammar on the internet anymore are trolls, retards, or people who wanna go for that moral high ground grab, which are you? i result to insults because a) look at the name of the thread. if you believe in the title, you go against me. b) not only do i just 'enjoy' listening, and not only do i rap battle online, but im also a hip hop artist, if you even bothered to check up on me. links by my name. you got eyes dontcha? also i dont dismiss those genres, the only genre i opinionly dismiss is country. and much higher difficulty? LOL thats all a matter of opinion at the end of the day. also, love your description. its fu<ks like you who continue to think that just because someone likes hip hop (which has a tendancy to be labeled as a 'black genre' by people who are shortsighted) combined with someone who uses insults should be labeled a thug. im no thug. im a 6 foot 3, 21 year old white guy. i dont get into fights, but ill run my mouth however i want. but you dont know a single thing about me. you just make blind assumtions based off of a few posts defending the art i love. what a disgrace YOU are, <unt.
